PIGGERY AT DALMORE.

TO THB EDITOR Sir, —The report of the General Committee of the City Council on the peti- ‘ tion from owners and occupiers of properties at Dalmore and Pine Hill re- . questing the suspension of the license of a man carrying on the business of pig farming' at Dalmore is of vital interest to owners and residents of the* Dalmore and Woodhaugh district s. Ihe health officer’s report is a contradiction. Compare these two extracts from the 1 Star * report—(l) The terms of the. health officer’s report are definite in their ihdication that no objection can be taken to the piggery from a health point of view; (2) sundry recommendations by the health officer lor the improved conduct of the farm have been communicated to the licensee. After reading the first extract one wonders why “ improved conduct of the farm ” is necessary, or was the second extract added to make it appear that councillors were solicitous of the. welfare of the residents of these districts? What has apparently been overlooked by our city fathers is whether a pig farm should be allowed m a' residential area. Surely a decision on that point is obvious. The smeli from a pig farm is’very objectionable; .it is a breeding place for flies, retards progress in the district, and is undoubtedly a menace to health. Would councillors shelter behind the report of the health officer if a license for a pig farm was applied for at St. Clair, Roslyn, or Royal terrace? In no other citv in the dominion would a license for pig, farming be granted in a resi- . dential area, and there is no reason why this desirable should have this handicap attached to it. This is a burning question in the Dalmore ana Woodhaugh districts. Councillors should reconsider their decision and suspend the license of this pig farm. —I arc, etc., , Progress. May 17.
