Mrs George Roberts has returned from Wellington, Mrs H. D. Stronach is at present visiting Ettrick. Mrs Georgo Ritchie and her daughter have gouo to Auckland. Mr and Mrs Winston Barron left to-day on their return to Hastings. Miss Robin Lintott (Auckland) is the guest of Miss Hartmann, Michie street. Monday, May 12, was the 110th anniversary of the birth of Florence N ightingale. Mrs Linton (Wellington) is the guest of her daughter, Mrs R. Davies, College street, Caversham. Mrs J. M'Leod and her daughter, of Gisborne, are revisiting old friends in Dunedin, The engagement is announced of Una Mavis Reay, only daughter of the late Mrs R. M. Walker, of Wellington, to Clarence, fourth son of Mr and Mrs R. Alderson, of Mataura, Southland, The mayoress (Mrs R. S. Black) was “ at home ” on Thursday afternoon at her RoSs street. After tea the guests adjourned to the drawing room ; where Mrs R. J. M'Laren (Christchurch) delighted all with her singing. On Wednesday afternoon, the musical programme at the Women’s Club was provided by pupils of the Misses Barth. Pianoforte solos were given by Mrs J. Wallace, Miss Olive Moreton, and Miss Maizie Wood, and songs by Bliss Mary Wills. Miss Zita Hart also contributed two songs. The Savoy grand ball, which was held as a grand finale to the Maternal Welfare appeal, was acknowledged by all concerned to be an unqualified social success; it has •' proved itself also of great financial benefit to the fund, the sum- of £135 .beirjg netted as a result. i Mrs H. Mandeno invited guests to her home in GranviWo terrace on Tuesday afternoon to meet Mrs A. M.. Begg, who has recently arrived from England. Those present were Lady Sidey, Mcsdamos R. S Black, Perrv, Frank Dunlop, Percy Priest, Hercus, M'Dougall, Burnside, Carswell, and G. Black.

The chairwoman (Mrs John Fraser) and the committee of the North Otago branch of the maternal welfare appeal fund are to be congratulated on the very generous response made in thendistrict, the siim_ of £561 having been handed in as their quota to the Otago branch.

To .mark the close of the Dunedin Ladies’ Bowling Association for the season, a social evening was held in the Early Settlers’ Hall on, Wednesday, when close on 250 guests were present. Progressive euchre was played in the supper room, and dancing was indulged in in the larger hall. During the evening the Donald Stuart Banner for the interclub matches, way presented to the Dunedin Ladies’ Club by Mrs J. Wallace (president of the association), and was accepted on behalf of her club by Mrs A. Gillies (president), Mr Easton responding on her behalf. The “ spoon ” was presented to the St. Clair Club, which entered the competition this year for the first time. Supper was served, and a happy evening ended with r j calling for three cheers for the association by Mr Easton, the call being heartily responded to.

Mrs Booth presided over a wellattended meeting of the Port Chalmers branch of the League of Mothers on Tuesday evening, when Mrs Bierrington gave a very instructive address on ‘ Religious Training in the Home.’ Iho speaker stressed the point of moulding a child’s life in its very early years, and stated that impression* nr do then came back in later life. “As parents,” she said, “we must show our children the example by living up to our teachings.” At the conclusion of tho address, Mrs Johnstoii thanked Mrs Merrington for her inspiring talk which would pro 'e helpful U all. Ordinarily the Court presentations of the dominions are undertaken by tho wife of the Secretary of State, but Lady Passfickl refuses to adopt the title or to attend Court. Lady Parmoor is carrying out the duties. Those who were to be presented at Court on Blay 15 included Blesdames Wilford, Leitch, Addison, and MacCartney. Birs Wilford will present Mesdames H. E Davis, J. L. Findlay, Blisses Sheila Dumbleton, Stella Murray, and Bleta Nixon (of Christchurch), Blesdames Hubert Nathan and Bruce Rennie (of Wellington), Bliss Joan Kelly (Napier), Miss Elena Helmoro (Timaru), and Bliss Virginia Nichols (Otago). Birs Hubert Nathan will present her daughter Jovce at the fifth Court on July 14,

What New Zealand makes makes New Zealand. This was brought home very forcibly to tho 300 women who met together in tho Otago Women's Club on Friday afternoon to view the display of New Zealand-made goods and to listen to the inspiring address delivered by Mr J. Hogg. These women will, it is hoped, make other converts, and so swell that already largo band which is determined to support, local industry and help to solve the unemployment question. Women have to a greater extent than men the spending power, and so with them lies tho solution of the burning question of the day. The monthly meeting of tho Blaon Hill branch of the League of Blethers was held in the Sims Street Hall on Thursday, Mrs J. R. Elder m the chair. Mrs Benson addressed tho meeting on the ‘Home Life of Japan," interesting all present in the construction of the home and the characteristics, Planners, and customs of the Japanese family. Mrs Bradstock thanked Mrs Benson for, her bright and interesting address. A humorous recitation by Bliss Dutton and a Japanese song by Birs Gregory were much appreciated. A friendly chat and afternoon tea closed a pleasant meeting. Miss Isobel Langlands, who is giving a recital at the Town Hall in a few weeks, in conjunction witli Mr Chas. Martin, has had a very line career in Australia, her home town being Blelbourne. The famous Russian pianist Sverjensky, of whom the ‘ Sydney Blail ’ wrote: “He surpasses Mosewitch,” specially engaged this brilliant violinist for his social recitals of Rachmaninoff’s beautiful ‘ Elegiac Trio.’ 81. Sverjensky publicly acknowledged the magnjficent playing of Bliss Langlands in this very difficult work, stating he had never had the pleasure of performing this work with a more delightful and brilliant violinist. Bliss Langlands at one time did a very extended tour as solo violinist with Stella Power, and also toured with Althouse and Middleton. Althouse greatly praising her for her obligato. Miss Langlands has given many recitals in Blelbourne, where she is so well known, Lady Forster, tho wife of the Governor-General, taking interest in her career and attending Bliss Langlands’s recitals personally on two occasions.

On Thursday evening Bliss Tui Bowman entertained a number of friends at a very jolly dance at ber home, “ Windermere,” Claremont street. Dancing took place in the i lounge, while the drawing room, the gunroom, and the spacious reception hall were charmingly arranged as lounges with large fires and subdued crimson lighting effects. Bowls of multi-coloured chrysanthemums, scarlet berries, and autumn foliage in profusion completed delightfully effective decorations. Supper was served in the dining room, the tables being beautifully arranged with tall silver vases of crimson roses. These present included Blr and Birs S. On Tuesday afternoon the members of tho Gardening Circle of the Otago Women’s Club heard a very interesting lecture given by Blr E. A. Hamel on chrysanthemums. The speaker, who was introduced by the chairwoman, Bliss Bi. Blartin, explained that m one way it was too early to deliver a lecture, and in another way it was a good time, as ho would be able to advise the members who had had failures with their plants what to do to prevent a repetition next year. Numerous questions were asked and answered, and at tho request of the members Blr Hamel gave the names of the following varieties of chrysanthemums which would bo good to plant:—Canary Time, Bronze Turner, Ida, E. N. Ward, Birs J. W. Blunro, jun., Roseday, Pink Pochette. Beach Blossom, Phyllis Cooper, Bandmaster, and Roma Bayliss. At the conclusion of the lecture Birs A. Lee Smith proposed a hearty vote of thanks to tho speaker for his interesting and instructive lecture, which was carried by acclamation.
