New Zealand’s economic position has had a detrimental effect on the attendance at the National rifle shooting meeting at Trentham. Had w'ool maintained last season’s values it is confidently expected that the entries would have been in the vicinity of 400. Trentham is known to shootists as tricky, on ac count of sudden wind variations. Today was perfect with respect to the weather, but the marksmen did not favour the conditions. In the afternoon the wind veered round to all points of the compass without warning, and those who struck bad patches fared badly. Many reliable shots crashed, including Captain Masefield and F. James, last year’s belt _ winner and runner-up respectively. The real business of shooting started late in the afternoon, when the first match counting for the belt was vlired. In the first match G. Eyles (Napier) finished with 49, his fifth shot being an inner. H. Searle (Nelson), who is a tyro, .secured the Imperial aggregate with 2QI, G. Harrison (Knponga), 200, being second.
