ANTARCTIC EXPLORATION
SIR HUBERT WILKINS NEW COAST LINE CHARTED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 2. (Received January 3, at 9.30 a.m.) A message from Sir Hubert Wilkins at Deception Island, dated December 3, states:—“ Three hundred miles of coast line was add:d to the map of the world on the last day of 1929. Our first attempt to penetrate the unknown regio: s lying south of us was balked by an impenetrable wall of falling snow. After flying 200 miles we came within sight of Charcot Land, where we were forced to return with nothing accomplished. Our second attempt to-day was a complete success., Charcot Land was found to be an island. We flew on westward over Hearst Land, and succeeded in charting the coast line there for 300 miles along the Antarctic Continent. We returned safely, but while lifting the aeroplane aboard the vessel ■he sling rope broke, and the machine crashed into the sea. It was only slightly damaged.”
