BRITAIN’S FINANCES
FIGURES FOR NINE MONTHS DECREASE IN REVENUE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, January 1. (Received January 2, at 1.30 a.m.) The Exchequer returns for nine months of the Budget year show the revenue to bo £418.000,000, a decrease of £18,000,000. The expenditure was £558.1X10,000, an increase of £l7,0 n V 000.
The ‘ Financial News’ says that it is painfully evident that Mr Snowden needs an unexampled resiliency of revenue if the Budget is to balance. The national accounts show a deficiency in revenue for three-quarters of the year of £109,797,000, compared with £137,770,000 -for a similar period last year, and £150,251,000 two years ago. Admitting that the filial quarter always goes far to correct the ultimate balance, the editorial is of opinion that a substantial deficit on the year is inevitable. It is extremely d :f ficult to see how now taxation can bo avoided which cannot promote trade or employment.
