CLERGYMAN DROWNED. The Rev. A. A. Barham, curate at Holy Trinity Church, Gisborne, was drowned yesterday afternoon in the Rere River. With three boys he went for a picnic and later went in tor a bathe. Two of the boys could swim. Mr Barham swam across" the ri.er, which at that' spot is about 30yds wide, safely, but. on returning was seen to be in difficulties. He was carried along by the current. Three times he went under and, .came, up again. One of the boys secured a hold on Mr Barham, but could not retain it, Mr Barham 1 disappearing. 1 The body was recovered some time later. Mr Barham went to Gisborno direct from England just over two years ago, and. was very popular in church circles, especially with the younger folks. The deceased was about thirty-two years or age, and was unmarried, and had no relations in the dominion. • . ■ v. - JOCKEY KILLED. A shocking fatality occurred on the Marten racecourse on Tuesday, when an apprentice jockey, lan Gregory Neich,, aged fifteen, a son of Mr George Iveicii, id Olarevdle, Carterton, suffered shocking head injuries from which he later expired. He was schooling the horse Full Mark, when the animal seemed to swerve, and the lad struck ,his head on. the distance post standing near the centre of the course. MOTOR CYCLISTS FATALLY INJURED. J. H. M'Garry, while motor cycling Lome to Sumner from Christchurch on Tuesday evening, collided with a car, driven by Harry Stoneman, and died, in hospital from injuries received, including a fractured skull and leg. Fatal injuries were suffered by Arnold M'Kee, aged eighteen years, when he was thrown from his motor cycle as a result of a collision with a motor delivery van at the Mount Albert (Auckland) intersection on Tuesday. Robert Buchanan,, aged fourteen years, who was riding on the pillion, seat, suffered head injuries, but his condition is not serious. BOY DROWNED IN BATHS.' The body of Robert Anderson Robert-; son, aged seven years, was found in the Phillipstown School (Christchurch); baths on Tuesday evening.' He had : beea noticed paddling at the shallow end; earlier in. the day, but later left with, companions.;. No one noticed his return, and the tragedy was not discovered till his parents instituted a search. MOTORS COLLIDE. On Tuesday afternoon a car driven by John Sheridan, containing another, man. and two girls, touched another machine driven by Robert G. Walker (Wellington), aucl also containing V . N. Piesse (Kiioimio), a few miles outside Gisborne. Sheridan’s machine capsized, ahd one girl—Dorothy Johnson, of Gisborne, eighteen years of age—was admitted to hospital, gut her condition is not considered serious. The others, m the car escaped with bruises. Thb machine was completely wrecked. Walker’s car, owned by Mi: R. W. G. Lye (Hastings), escaped * with a crumpled' front wheel and mudguard. SPEEDWAY CRASH. While racing in the Goldeiy Helmed Challenge Race at the Kilbirnie (Wellington) speedway C. Spinks (Australia), when leading by 30yds from W, Kilmister (New Zealand champion), crashed, spraining his ankle. The race was abandoned.
