Time, Imin 34 2-ssec. . NOTES OH THE EVENTS If 'Corn Queen had got away smartly in the Trial Plato she would have taken sonio' beating. The Nigbtraid—RosaIfta filly was one of the worst sufferers in a fcad start, being left nearly five lengths, yet she was beaten by only two lengths by Captivate. The scratching pen - reduced the field to ten starters, and Solmuri was made a slightly better favourite than Quin Opal, with Captivate next in demand. Bon Waif, (on whom a big last-minute investment vvas made) held up the start' by bolting down the back/ 1 ! 'and when the field' was ultimately sent away to a ragged line, Captivate shot to the front with Bon Waif, Solmuri, and Quin Opal next out. Crown-Mystery, Corn Queen, and Saxie •were alow to, 1 move. Captivate was two lengths clear-of Bon Waif, Quin Opal, Com Queen at the far turn, where Solmuri was on the outer. Captivate was still in charge at the top of tbe straight from Quin, Opal and Bon -Waif. Solmuri stopped and Corn Queen, came through. In the race homo Captivate won by two lengths from Corn Queen, with Captain’s Gift, who was behind the loaders till the straight was reached, a length and ahalf away..’ Quin Opal, Stringbow, and Solmuri were the next to finish. * * Carrying almost twice as much money as the next selection, Solgele, for the Bray Memorial Handicap, El Boa fully justified the support given her. The Dunedin-owned mare jumped out smartly, and after being hundy, romped away from the opposition at the business end. Both Mount Boa and Tripaway were slow out of the barrier. Attract shot out in great style,; being quickly two lengths clear of E:1 Boa and Wig Wag. At'the far turn Attract was four lengths clear of El Boa and Wig Wag, who were running together. Wig Wag suffered interference and dropped back suddenly. Attract was five lengths ahead of El Boa, with Wig Wag three lengths backhand Meitui at the head of the following, bunch. Attract collapsed down the -running, leaving El Boa, to- go. on. to . win easily by three I&&WS,',-. Meitui fast into second: place. ■ Mount Boa was a length and a-lialf away and was: travel? ling well at the finish. Wig Wag was fourth', with Attract fifth.

The Gup' field bad no chance with Taboo, who was .nearly £2OO. better backed : than John . Bradbury. The public'were right on tbe mark. Taboo, who won the Cup last year, scored comfortably from John Bradbury, none of- the other four fcompetitors having any chance with these two horses over the final two' furlongs. Wingatui, Tcheka, Narrative, High Gear, and Roj'al Flower were scratched. ■ The heavy going ' suited Taboo, and although carrying' a ; 71b penalty for his i Otago .Handicap win, the old fellow, was the only one in the picture when the judge was reached. From a fair line, Stealth hopped out smartly from Waving Corn, Tardy, Taboo, and Tembroney They turned out of the straight in that order. On the bend Tembroney nearly fell and dropped back to last. Waving Corn was hurried up to Stealth along the railway, and John Bradbury rushed past Taboo to take third place. Stealth and Waving Corn faced together round tho bend, a length clear of John Bradr bury, with Taboo oil the outer. They came' into , the straight in that order. Stealth was the first to fade when challenged by John Bradbury, and he quickly also had Waving Corn’s measure. Outside the distance Taboo in the middle of the course, challenged John Bradbury and went _on to win easily by three lengths, with Waving flora four lengths.. back, and Stealth close up fourth. Tembroney fell at the home bend, but. her .jockey (A. E. Didham), who carried 17jib overweight, was uninjured.

The New Year Trot Handicap was a poor race, two smashes upsetting calculations. Backers of the favourite, Lady Zephyr, did not get. a run for their money, the Wrack mare stopping on her mark, and two other warm fancies in Ambition and Hawksbury’s Pride were quickly put out of the race when they lost their drivers. Shortly after the start, when Golden Vale was very slow in striking a gait, there was a merry mix-up, and tbe careerings of the driverless Ambition, Hawksbury’s Pride, and Dillon Bird unsettled the field, as the first two horses galloped to the front with tho sulkies bouncing over the course, until the machines were completely smashed. The smartest to begin Was Auto, and he showed the way over the first quarter of a mile to Tiny Bingen, who then hit the front. _ Passing the stand Tiny Bingen was just clear of Pando Pointer, Auto being about twelve lengths back. With a mile to go, Kinney Dillon was trotting evenly and reducing the handicaps. At the far turn Kinney Diljon was challenging the leaders, wliile Golden 'Vale was six lengths back. Kinney Dillon

was in front at the straight entrance, and went "on to _ win without being challenged by eight lengths from Golden Vale, who beat the tired Pando Pointer by a similar distance. Tiny Bingen 'was another length back. Kinney Dillon went solidly throughout, hut Golden : Vale was one who was given a momentary sot-hack when the accidents 'occurred. !•• • • Master , Clarence was backed down to under evens for the Highweight Handicap. and scored an easy win. The field of seven was sent away tp a good line. Tardy was the first to show' ' out, but Royal Flower and Court Jester headed her after they had gone a few strides. At the lead Court Jester, Royal Flower, and Tardy into the back stretch. Green Cloth opened out a three lengths lead, but with four furlongs gone. Tardy ranged alongside him and Master Clarence moved up behind the leaders, Court Jester and Heather Lad following. Tardy took charge from Green Cloth on the home turn, but once heads were turned for home, Master Clarence put in a strong run and drew away to .win easily by four lengths from Tardy, with Royal Flower three lengths back, followed closely by Green Cloth and Heather Lad. Candidates from F. P. Claridgo’s Riccarton stable are always heavily suportod at Waikouaiti, and Master Clarence’s backers had no anxiety at any stage of the • *, * • Another of Claridge’s elect, Bonrose, was sent out the best supported horse of the day for the Hawksbnry Hack Handicap. Wig Wag was £6OO less backed, while Mount Boa was next in demand. At the start Mount Boa was again slow in jumning out, and Crossbow, showed the way" out to Wig Wag and Colonel Quex. Wig Wag quickly hit the front and lead round the top from Bonrose and Colonel Quex. Mount Boa was overhauling the leaders, but nearing the straight entrance he was still four lengths behind the trio and on the outside running Mount Boa came, fast in the straight and got up to beat Wig Wag by three-quarters of a length, with Bonrose half a length away. Mount Boa was travelling at finish of the Bray Memorial and with a stronger horseman up for the six he should have been better supported. Bonrose raced as if the going was too heavy for her. • # ♦ * Almost half the field in the Domain Trot had its chances interfered with by a bad crash before the loa'ders had gone_ 100yds. One big dividend a day is always promised _at Waikouaiti and betting took a < wide range, the public going for everything likely to pay handsomely. Cytheria- was sent out favourite. When the word was given, Dolly. Chimes did not go and Auto led Travis Wilkes and Elite Bingen out. As the field raced past the inside enclosure ’ Travis Wilkes and Elite Bingen toppled over in the had going. The riders, T. Hobbs and H. Butcher, were thrown heavily. Dazed, Hobbs ran towards the rails and' fell under another horse. The accident upset the field and Aviatrix was. left in charge from Guy Bingen. Going along the back, Guy Bingen, Opened out a six lengths lead from Aviatrix, while Auto was some distance 7 back. At the top of the straight this trio, with Almont Cling and Gold Chimes, were the only ones in the race proper and Guy Bingen drew out to win easily by six Ipngths from Aviatrix, with Almont Cling five lengths away. It was a poor race. Hobbs was picked up and removed to hospital. Ho, did not appear to -be seriously injured. . :

The finest race of the day was provided in the, Orbell Stakes, in which Evening was the only competitor who had not had a previous race. El Boa was installed a £SO better favourite than Stealth in a fine betting race. At the start, Stealth, which gave F. Voight his first ride of the day. shot across from the outer and led El Boa and Sofgcle. Waving Corn was then hustled to the front, while Stealth was steadied, El Boa and Solgele racing along with Waving Corn. The order was unchanged along the back where El Boa was temporarily chopped out. Waving Corn Jed by a length from El Boa into the straight, with Stealth and Solmuri coming again. El Boa ran up to Waving Corn and they were four lengths dear of Stealth early down the running. Stealth dashed out. Waving Corn stopped and in a great finish Stealth failed to catch El Boa by a nose. Miss Marco finished in the middle of the field like a train, a length away. AUCKLAND COUNT GAVOUR WINS BIG HANDICAP HUNTING CRY AGAIN The Auckland Club’s Summer Meeting was continued at Ellerslie in showery weather. The going, was heavy, but the racing was excellent. The totalisator receipts for the day were £74,1825, compared with £98,757 for the corresponding day of last year, a decrease of £24,574}. NOTES ON THE EVENTS [By St. Claib.] After a rough morning and showers until after the first race the weather cleared, and the remainder of the programme of the Wyndham Racing Club’s annual meeting was conducted in bright sunshine. The course was in good order but slow. The attendance was large, and the special train from Dunedin was well patronised before it arrived at its destination. The racing Was interesting, s but backers of first favourites had another Jean time of it.

Circulation won the Wyndham Cup well, and it came as a big surprise to find she had, not been paid up for in the Invercargill Cup. Other Wingatuitrained horses to win Royal Saxon, Impertinence, and Wise Choice. An inquiry was held into Quantum’s running in the President’s Handicap, and the evidence showed that he galloped on Red Boa’s heels and nearly came down. ,An inquiry was also held into the interference Blue Metal met with in the Mimihau Handicap, but in both cases it was_ found that the interferences were accidental, and no action was taken.

All Smiles was' withdrawn from the New Year Hurdles,' and Maungamoe was sent out a slightly better favourite than Red Heather, each being about£loo better fancied than Nincompoop, Dubious and Maungamoe led to the first hurdle, and then led Red Heather and Dubious over the next. Passing the stand Red Heather had taken charge, and he led to the mile post from the favourite, Dubious, and Blazing Light. Then Maungamoe took charge and led Dubious and Red Heather into the straight. Beauty Light put in a good run from the distance post, but could not catch the favourite, who won by two lengths. Dubious was five lengths further back, and Red Heather a poor fourth. Nincompoop fell at the second hurdle, and Calham tailed off all the way. ft ft * ' • The withdrawal of Nonchalant and Lorette from the Trial Plate Handicap saved the race from being run in two divisions, and Remindful was selected ns tho best bet, with Wise Choice, Banner Boy, and Crubenmore the best fancied of the others. Valuator and Some Queen gave .trouble at the barrier, but when the tapes were released the field was in excellent line. Crnbenmore and Wise Choice were the smartest to jump out, and when a furlong had been covered Crubenmore was leading Milliner, Wise Choice, Banner Boy, and Sea Gay. This was tho order to the turn into the straight, where Crubenmore ran wide and carried Milliner out with her. This let Wise Choice through on the rails, and she was followed by Banner Boy and Sea Gay, In the run to tho post Wise Choice stayed' on to beat Banner Boy by a long neck, and Valuator, two lengths further back, was followed by Milliner, Skysign, Rombeau, and Cortor. • « ft ft In the Diggers’ Class Harness Trot the scvatchings were Marvin Dillon, Free Chimes, Evening Sun, Moneymore, Bingasia, and Golden Dawn. On the good form he showed at Forbury Erin Chimes was made a very solid favourite, being more than twice as well backed as Alva Lass, who was second choice, and Ellegro, Brainwave, and the bracketed pair Erin’s Star and Snnfire nest fancied; Alva Lass and Luath lost their chances at the start, from which Wavesoon began, the best, and led Erin’s Star, Jack Hobbs, and Princess Pointer for over a mile. Then Erin’s Star joined Wavesoon, and Sea Hawk ran " ;to third place. Erin’s Star led Sea Hawk and Jack Hobbs into the straight, and at the distance Sea Hawk challenged Erin's Star, but the latter stayed on long enough to win bv a long neck. Sen Hawk was a length and a nnarter off third, followed by Brain Wave, Wavesoon, and Erin’s Chimes. ft ' ft ft ft Celerity 11. and Dumblane were withdrawn from the Wyndham Gold Cup, and Black Duke was better backed than Night Lad, Queen Balboa, or Circulation, who were evenly supported. Money Mine, Night Lad, and Tchekaled down the straight, and turning out of the straight Black Duke and Circu-

lation were lying last. Iho three leaders maintained their positions into the back stretch, and going to the hallmile post Circulation had run up behind them. Rounding the far turn Tcheka and Night Lad were showing a little in front of Money Mine, and Circulation, with the favourite still last. Racing for the home turn the latter made a. forward move on the rails, but failed to get through, and Night Lad led Tcheka, Money Mine, and Circulation into the straight. The latter ran past the leaders just after passing the distance post and won, very decisively by two lengths from Night Lad, who was a head in front of Queen Balboa, with Camisader half a length away next. Money Mine and Black Duke were next, and Tcheka last. Mr D. M'Dougall, M.P. for Mataura, pijothe gold cup attached to the stake to. Mr L. C. Hazlett, owner of the winner. '• * • • The field for the Mimihau Hack Handicap was reduced by the scratching of Attractive Lady, Vinegrove, Sea Gay, Pink Sunrise, Skysign, Lady Winton, and Coupling. Jack a Dandy was over £250 better fancied than Blue Metal, Flying Bingen, or Inevitable, who were evenly hacked. Bine Metal was the first to show out from a good start, but quickly gave way to Dry Area, who led along the back front Ace of Hearts, Jack a Dandv, and Blue Metal. Racing round the tar turn Jock o’ Hazeldean moved up, and turning into the straight the field was bunched, with Dry Area, the favourites, Inevitable, and Jock o’ Hazeldean in the front row. At the distance; post Inevitable showed out, and Blue Metal put in a good run, but just failed bv a long neck to reach -Inevitable.' Jack a Dandy was a length away third, and then came Jock o Hazeldean, Lucky Maid, and Dry Area. •:• • • Royal Tractor and Blue Metal being withdrawn from the President’s Handicap left a field of six,', and Quantum, who had a full apprentice’s allowance, was made about £l5O better favourite than Royal Saxon, who was only a few pounds better backed than Red Boa, Subdivision, or Full Fling. Royal Saxon was the first to show out, but quickly gave way to Subdivision and Full Fling, who were three lengths clear of Royal Saxon and Quantum as they raced along the back. The only change at the far turn was dropping back last. Full Fling and Subdivision led Royal Saxon into- the straight, but allowed the latter to get through on the rails, and he won easily by three lengths from Subdivision. Red Sea, two lengths away, just headed Full Fling for third money. The favourite finished a bad last. • « ♦ * In the Victory Harness Trot Liberal, Decoy Bells, Moneymore, Sunbell, and Bay Admiral were withdrawn, and the locally-trained Meteor was established a good favourite, with the bracketed pair, Coldstream Guard and Erin’s Prince, also solidly supported, and Sunshade the best backed of the others. Golden Dawn went away at a gallop; and lost a lot of ground, and Meteor and Southern Light led Luath and Melbar for six furlongs. Then Luath ran up to Meteor, and this pair led along the back, Sunshade and Golden Dawn running up next at the far turn. Luath dropped out racing across the top, and Meteor led Golden Dawn and Sunshade into the straight. Golden Dawn broke at the distance post, and in a punishing finish Meteor just stayed on long enough to beat Sunshade by half a length. Streak was six lengths away third, followed by Erin’s Prince and Golden Dawn.

In the Visitors’ Hack Handicap Francolin, Jock o’ Hazeldean, Insolence, and Commentor being withdrawn, Salmo Salar was made about £l5O better favourite than Abbeville, with Impertinence and Dumblane next fancied. Impertinence led out of the straight from.'Cetchela, and going into the back straight West Dome was next. After passing the half-mile post Abbeville and Dumblane ran up and fdllowed Impertinence across the top, where Salmo Salar was running fourth. Impertinence led Abbeville and Dumblane into the straight, and drew out to win by four lengths from Dumblane. Salmo Salar, two lengths away, just beat Abbeville for third place, and Takaka and West Dome were next. WAIRARAPA PIUTHAIR WINS CUP The first day of the Wairarapa Rac iug Club’s Meeting was held at Tau herenikau in fine weather. Tho tracx was in good order, and there was a record attendance. In a good betting pool Wrackler was made a hot favourite for the President’s Handicap on the final day of tho Auckland trots, carrying £2,684. The bracketed pair Dilworth and Imprint was entrusted with £963, while tho third choice, Free Advice, carried £685. At the start Padlock stood on the mark and took no part in the race, while Kohara lost his driver and badly interfered with Free Advice, the latter being pulled up. At the stand Dil- ' worth was leading Linkman, Bonny Logan, The Abbpy, AA 7 rackler, Machine Gun, Prince Pointer, and Peterwah. No alteration occurred in the next round, and when they came to the stand again Dilworth was still bowling along in front from Linkman, Bonny Logan, The Abbey, Wrackler, Machine Gun, and Peterwah, all being handy to the leader. Along the back there was little between Dillworth, Linkman, and Machine Gun, but about four lengths away there was a big bunch, with AVrackled in a bad position on the rails. Machine Gun tired going across the top, and Dilworth and Linkman led into the straight well clear of Machine Gun, with Wrackler, who had now got out of the ruck, putting in a good run. In the straight Wrackler finished at a great rate, and just failed by a neck to read: Dilworth. Wrackler was a peck in front of Linkman, with Niativc Prince two lengths away, and then followed Mqphine Gun, Imprint, Bonny Logan, and Peterwah. AVrackler was a good thing beaten. The winner is trained by L. F. Berkett. of Nelson. TURF IH AUSTRALIA TATTERSALL'S CLUB GESTO WINS AGAIN SYDNEY, January 1.
