MATCH AT CARISBROOK

AUCKLAND OUT FOR 145 Despite the early morning rain the wicket at Carisbrook was in good order for the resumption of the match between an Otago eleven and Mr E. C. Beale’s Auckland touring cricket team this morning. Although on the slow side at the outset, the wicket improved dining the morning, the bowlers being able to make some pace off it. Otago compiled 159, Auckland having lost no wickets for 61 runs when the game was recommenced to-day. Lawrie and Vipond carried trie, score to 91 before the former was beaten by Silver after scoring 59. _ Lawrie played an aggressive innings from the start, scoring freely all round the wicket. Ho was making some powerful off drives this morning, placing his shots very nicelv. Vipond made 33 by painstaking cricket, being particularly strong on the leg side, while he also put plenty of power into his drives. Lyon batted attractively for 22, most of his runs being scored behind the wickets. He made some wristy strokes through the slips, and also placed a shot nicely behind third man. He was just as effective on the leg side, and was eventually bowled by Lemin in going for a big hit. Schnauer batted soundly for 10, but the remainder of the batsmen offered little resistance to the attack, Lemiu in particular being very hard to play as the wicket improved. The innings closed for 145 runs after 175 minutes’ play. Lemin bowled remarkably well for Otago, finishing up with seven wickets for 43 runs. As the wicket improved he was making pace off the pitch, and ho maintained a good length practically throughout. Dickinson did not bowl so last as usual, but he proved awkward towards the close of the innings, swinging late. Ho did not bowl much more than a fast medium ball, but kept a consistently good length, his two wickets costing 45 runs. Silver bowled well for a time, and took one for 23, Groves and Lynch failing to claim a victim. Otago’s fielding showed a big improvement on that shown yesterday afternoon, a feature of the play being the fine exhibition behind the wickets given by Heenan, who had only one bye registered against him and stumped two men, catching another. At the luncheon adjournment Otago had lost two wickets for 13 runs, PLAY DETAILED.

Lawrie straight drove Lcmin for a couple, and Vipond faced another maiden from Dickinson, who was well on the wicket.

Lawrie drove Lcmin through the covers for a couple, and repeated the shot for a single. Lawrie turned Dickinson to square-leg for 3, and lifted Lemin over the on pickets for 6. Lawrio made a well-timed drive along the carpet to the off boundary, and a full toss he sent sizzling to the leg pickets. Silver replaced Dickinson with the score at 86, and bowled a maiden, Lynch coming on in place of Lemin, Vipond turned him to leg for a single, Lawrie driving to tho on for 1. Lawrie batted for ninety minutes, scoring freely all round the wicket. Lyon, who was the incomer, opened with a single to fine-leg, then facing Lynch for a maiden. Silver was bowling a fastish ball and keep ing well on the wicket, sending down his second maiden to Vipond., The Aucklanders were batting very carefully, runs com-

ing very slowly. Lyon hanged a full toss from Lynch to the square-leg boundary, and a similar delivery two balls later was treated with the same disrespect. Dickinson came on again in place of Silver, and Vipond glanced him nicely to squai’C leg, for a brace, following with a single. Lemin took over from Lynch, and off his third hall Vipond was well stumped by Keenan. 103—2 — 33. .’Ritchie and Tooxney again opened for Otago, Lyon commencing the attack from the South Dunedin end and registering a maiden. Lawrie took charge of the ball at the other end, and Toomey popped up a very short length ball almost into the hands of square leg. However, the stroke produced the first run of the innings. Trundling to Tooxney, Lyon howled his second maiden. Lawrie’s third ball in his next over brought about tho early downfall of Ritchie, the left-hander getting his leg in front. I — l—o.

Groves, next man in, scored a-3 by flicking Lawrie through the slips, and when facing Lyon ho cut him for a single. A single to Toomey in the last ball of the over saw him again take the howling. He did not last long, for he hit tip an easy catch for the wicketkeeper to collect. 6—2—2. Lynch became associated with Groves, and Langton, bowling with a slow, curly flight, went on in place of Lyon. Groves scored a couple to the on, and then won applause with a sweet off drive to the fence, all along the carpet. Toomey then opened his account by turning Lawrie for a single. A maiden to each bowler followed, and the luncheon adjournment was taken. Scores - OTAGO.
