SUMMER MEETING OPENED The .weather was dull but fine and the temperature at Wingatui moderately warm to-day, when the Summer Meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club was opened. Considering the very heavy rain experienced during the past week the track was in much better order thaai many expected to find it. It ■was slow, but provided good going, and specially favoured those horses which like the sting out of the ground. Considering the largo number of people out of town, the attendance was quite satisfactory, aind included a large number of visitors from Southland. From the jump out Taramoa led Red Heather and Dubious, and the order was unchanged as they raced past the stand, where Beauty Light was running last. Red Heather jumped to the front, but Taramoa again took charge, and they wore four lengths clear of Dubious and Blue Peter till the mile post was reached, where Red Heather went to the front. So they raced along the hack, and at the far turn Beauty Light made a forward run and joined Taramoa in the lead, with Dubious two lengths back. In the run home Meadow Lark came through to win easily by two lengths, while Quantum came fast on the outer to boat Subdivision by a head. Time, 1 min 16 3-ssec. SALISBURY HANDICAP, SOOsovs; second 30, third 15, Im. 6Mr W. J. Hargreavc’s HIGH Gear, Gvrs (Tractor—Call Bird), 8.6 (B. H. Brodic) ... 1 S—Mr J. Ruttledgc’s Salmo Salar, car. 7.7 (F. D. Ingram) ... 2 s—Mr 11. Longley’s Thurso, car. 7.3 (N. J. Salmo Salar and Thurso were the smartest out, and at tho far turn Salmo Salar was just clear of Thurso, Court Jester, High Gear and Commenter. In the run down the straight High Gear came through to catch Salmo Salar outside tho distance, and won by a length and a-half, with Thurso a neck away in front of Town Major. Time, Iniin 43 4-ssec.
