Excitement arose in the committee stage on the Unemployment Insurance Bill when the Conservatives decided to support a Liberal amendment making the payment of insurance money to persons under eighteen conditional upon their attendance at some course of instruction. Miss Margaret Bondlield (Minister ot Labour) opposed the amendment on the ground that it was impracticable, as the machinery for giving instruction did not exist. ... . For some time it was believed that the Government would be defeated, but the amendment was defeated by -■>> votes to 167. The Labourites cheered, one shouting: “The new coalition won’t work,’!
