“TWOPENCE TO PAY.”—An historic old toll-house at Hampstead. Beside it stands the 18th century inn known to fame as The Spaniards. This interesting old tavern stands at the junction of Spaniards. Road and Hampstead Lane, Hampstead Heath. The Gordon Rioters were delayed here on their way to destroy Lord Mansfield’s house at Ken Wood. The inn figures in Dickens’s “Pickwick Papers.”
