TYPISTE TAKES CHARGE OF COURT “ HASTY REPORTERS (Pan, Usited Puses Assocunox. , WELLINGTON, November 1. A by-law case caused some amusement in the S.M. Court, when a young woman typiste was charged with not paying her tram-fare. Although sitting in court when her name was called, she paid no attention, and a fine of 10s was inflicted in default. The prosecution said she had given a lot of trouble, refusing to pay tares, and appeared to think that she had the right to travel free. ■ ■ About an hour afterwards defendant •approached the City Council’s solicitor and asked him- when her case was to be beard, .and said she never heard her name called. The S.M. declined to reopen the case, and the girl then said she couldn’t pay the fine, and caused laughter by her description of the inspector .wanting to see her ticket, when, as she said, “ructions started.” The Magistrate gave her a month to pay, and defendant then wanted her name suppressed. He told her to apply to the reporters. Defendant (scornfully): “Hrnm—reporters—those nasty people!” At this the whole court, including the S.M., bui;Bt out into fresh laughter, and the episode ended up by defendant thanking the magistrate and telling him* she' had wasted the whole bally afternoon bunting for him.
