Resenting bis criticism of her performance in 1 Conscience ’ at the Little Theatre, Lilian Foster, an American actress, smacked the 'face of Mr Hannen Swaffer, the dramatic critic of the * Daily Express.’ “ I smacked him wholeheartedly on behalf of America,” sain Miss Foster, when describing the assault, which occurred at a luncheon at the Savoy Hotel. “If he continues to say such uncalled for tilings about Americans I will smack him again.” Mr Swaffer had likened Miss Foster’s voice to that of a ventriloquist’s doll.
