The quarterly ballot of the Dominion' Building Society was hold last evening, when Mr J. Y. Love presided over a fair attendance of members. The chairman intimated that the society was continuing to show steady progress. This ballot would complete the ballot* for this financial year, and would bring the total ballotted to date to £113,700, which represented a substantial advance towards home purchase. CUSTOMS RETURNS. The Customs returns for the month ended October 31 amounted to £7(3,680 3s lid. as gainst £72,081 J9s ; '7d toe the ■com&udhding period of host . -veaiv The beer duty was £20,064 14s 2d, as against £25,069 IBs 6d.- The petrol tax amounted to £5,550 17s Sd, as against £4,154 11s Sd, and the motor tyre duty to £962 14s, as against £1,453 14s last year. The Customs revenue collected at lh» port of Wellington for October was £284,869, against £220,993 for, October,, 1928. The total for the ten months of the year to October 31 was £3,564,367* against £2,139,576 for the corresponding period of 1928. The duty collected on’motor spirit for October. 1929, was £28,961 4s 4d, compared with £28,14.3 3s in October, 1928. The total for ten months was £321,953, compared with £225,563 from March 1 to October 31* 1928—the only months for which figures are available. The tyre tax collected for October was £3,027 9s, compared with £3,484 11s 4d for October,1928. The total for the ten month* was £47,240, as against £35.481 from March 1 to October 31, 1928. Beer excise collections last month were £5,570 4s lOd. compared with'£s,2l7 12s 8d in October, 1928. The total for the ten months was £41,901, compared with £42,595 for the corresponding period of 1928. The Customs duties collected at Christchurch during October were £104,002 16s, compared with £87,064! 16s in October, 1928, and £121,147 in September. From January to October, 1929, the Customs duties were £986,533, compared with £849,790 for the corresponding period of 1929. DALGETY DIVIDEND. !
