THE LATE MR HALL

The announcement of the sudden death of Mr R. W. Hall, the mayor of St. Hilda, yesterday afternoon came as a severe shock to his many friends and associates in the city. Mr Hall left his home in Eskvale street early in the afternoon with the intention of proceeding to town, and on reaching the corner of New street made a sudden grasp at a gate and dropped dead' almost immediately. He was taken to his home close by, and Dr Allen was called in, but'could only pronounce life extinct.; The cause of death, it is understood, was heart failure. Mr Hall was a public man, and as such was known by many people. But both in public and private life he was held in the highest regard by all with whom he came in contact. His innate kindliness was always unobtrusively apparent, and his name was honoured in a very wide circle. He gave of his best in many public activities, and his death will constitute a distinct loss to_ many different institutions. At the time of his death Mr Hall was associated with Messrs N. and E. S. Paterson, Ltd., as business salesman, and proved himself a most energetic and efficient business man. He is survived by a widow, three sons, and one daughter, one of the sous being resident m Honolulu. Feeling reference to Mr Hall’s death was made by the Rev. Stanley Jenkiu at the South Dunediu Baptist Bazaar, held in the Corporation Hall yesterday. Mr Hall was to have declared the bazaar open, and while those assembled were waiting for him the news of his death was received. As Mr Jenkiu stated, the announcement naturally cast a great gloom over proceedings. Mr Hall, he said, was a citizen highly respected and greatly trusted in the public life of the borough. Such a worthy citizen could ill bo spared. Clio deepest sympathy of the gathering would be convoyed to Sirs Hall and the family. The funeral will be on Saturday, at 2.30 p.ra.
