GAS DEPARTMENT.

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Would it be pertinent to ask if the City Councillors use common sense when their officers recommend the expenditure of thousands of pounds on diff ent schemes, and look into the matter themselves? he reason I ask ;s that they are about to spend dose on £IO,OOO on a gas holder, whereas oh is money should bo spent on retorts—that is, judging by the gas holder that s in Wilkie road. Since the council discussed this matter some months ago, this bolder has not been up to the GOO.OOO mark, and 1 believe it is capable of holding one million cubic feet. Doping that the chairman of the Gas Committee will give an explanation at the next meeting of the City Council.—l am, etc., Common Sense October 28.
