ASSAULT ALLEGES

HEPHEW LEAVES HOME [Pee United Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, October 25. Allegations of continued cruelty and neglect were made in the Police Court this morning before Mr W.-'H. Woodward, S.M.,_whon Arthur Robert Blondell, of Waimatua, was charged with assaulting his nephew, a youth of sixteen, named George Henry ■.Tweedle. The accused, who was represented by Mr Gordon Reed, pleaded not guilty. In opening the ■ case Senior-sergeant Fox said that the youth_ alleged to have been assaulted was sixteen yeaie of age, and was a nephew of the accused. It was intended to show m evidence that the boy ? who for two years had been living with the accused, had been roughly treated. Following the alleged assault the boy bad cleared out. and had called on a Mr- Murdoch. He had little clothing on, and appeared to have been knocked about. The next day die had been found work with a Mr Shirley, and had been there ever since. The accused had sought out the police shortly afterwards, »ad made a statement in which he savd. that he could give no reason why tb« boy, should clear out. The accused, had given him a good character, and had said that he had been well tre"ted. The defence w.-ss a denial of th® qharges, and the suggestion was made that the complainant’s injuries had been received as the result of falling from a cart.

The case was adjourned till No-em-ber 2 for the purpose of hearing farther evidence.
