WAIPIATA SANATORIUM

MEETING OF COMMITTEE : The committee of the Waipiata Sanatorium met in Dunedin, there being present Messrs J. Matheson (chairman), VV. Bryant, E. Macdonald, H. Grenfell, J. Clark,, J. G. Johnston, J. Ritchie, and P. Aitken. _ The District Engineer of the Public Works Department, Dunedin, wrote asking for further particulars in connection with the granting of a water power license to the committee, and the secretary’s reply'suggesting that the license be issued in the name of His Majesty the King, as were the committee’s water rights, was approved. Dr Kidd reported having admitted twelve patients in September, discharged twelve, while 111 remained on October 1. These, with ihe exception of eleven, whose condition was reported l as stationary, were doing well or improving. He. reported on the results of his visits to the different centres, and patients he had examined and recommended for admission to the sanatorium.—The report was adopted, and the matter of an electric polisher for the pavilion floors was left in the hffnds of Mr Ritchie and the secretary to make inquiries and report. The Secretary reported that on Octo her 19 the associated boards had patients in the sanatorium as follows: South Canterbury 35, Southland 26, Ashburton 15, Waitaki 16, South Otago 12, Wallace 5, Maniototo 2, Vincent 2, and Waipiata Sanatorium Committee 1; a total of 114. Of this number one patient had been in for more than two years, twelve for more than one year, and 101 for less than one year. Since last committee meeting ten patients had been discharged from the institu-tion-nine with the disease arrested and one condition unchanged. He submit ted a list of suitable patients awaiting admission from the following districts; —South Canterbury 7, Southland 11, Waitaki 6, South Otago 3, Wallace 4 and Maniototo 1; a total of 32. Arrangements had been made for six to enter the institution almost immediately, w'hicb would cut down the actual waiting list to 26. —Received. The Secretary reported having received the sum of £7O 6s 2d for skins and hides sold since the previous meeting.—The reports were adopted. Mr Aitken, on behalf of the Farm Committee, stated that Mr Ritchie, new farm manager, had taken up his duties at the beginning of the month, and had taken an inventory of all stock and implements on the place. Certain boundary fences would require to be repaired, and this matter was left in the hands of Mr Aitken and the manager to attend to. The committee also advised that steps vvere being taken to extend the irrigation drains so as to bring in more land under lucerne cultivation ; while the matter of pig curing and the disposal of any surplus bacon was left in the hands of Mr Aitken, the secretary, and the farm manager, with power to act. The Secretary reported that the contract for the raising of the w’alls and increasing the storage capacity of the main dam had' been signed and the work commenced. Mr E. R. Wilson reported that Mr A. M. Harris, contractor, liad_ made a start on the work in connection with the assistant medical officer’s house, new laundry, and drainage, and that he was making a visit to Wainiata for the purpose of inspecting the foundations of the different buildings. The secretary reported having received from the Director-General of Health departmental approval to the acceptance of Mi Harris’s tender, which had been slightly in advance of the architect’s estimate. ■ The Secretary also reported what had been done in the matter of laundry machinery, and his report was adopted, and the matter left in his hands to report more fully to next meeting as to the actual equipment required. The Treasurer (Mr T. Pryde) submitted a statement of the committee’s receipts and payments since the previous meeting, with bank balance at date, the accounts showing that the actual receipts for seven months ended October showed a slight decrease on the amount estimated, while the actual maintenance payments also showed a decrease, leaving the accounts practically in conformity with the estimates.--Received. Accounts and salaries totalling £1,102 13s 5d were passed for payment.
