CROQUET
It is intended to devote some space in each Saturday’s issue to items of inerest to croquet players. The sectaries of the various clubs are asked to end in notes to “ Diana " not later than .Wednesday in each week Correspondence is invited and inquiries as, to fine points of the game or other matters connected with croquet will bo answered as far as possible.
ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
“ Beginner.”—An excellent boot is Dr Whittaker’s ‘ Standard Croquet,’ if you want to make a real study of the game, and to understand angle shots, etc. ‘ A.B.C of Croquet ’ is much simpler and explains the rules very well.
The Otago Association has drawn up the inter-club matches, the first to be played on November 14. Players should note the following rule in the new annual, which is really a reversion to the rule of two seasons ago:—“Should the striker roquet a rover on to the peg, that ball shall he deemed to be pegged out, and the turn shall at once cease.” The newly-formed Opoho Club has affiliated with the Otago_ Association —they arc too late to join in this season’s inter-club matches, but should be well in the running for next season. Mrs John Neil (Punga Club) is at present in London, enjoying her holiday immensely. Mrs Penrose (Punga Club), with her sister. Miss Howe, is touring on the Continent, and expects to return to Dunedin about February next. TAIERI CROQUET CLUB, " This ciub opened for the season at their lawns in Mosgicl Mrs Pringle (President). in a very happy speech, welcomed the visitors and thanked the members of the local howling clubs and other men friends who had looked after their lawns. Some twenty visitors from the various Dunedin clubs were present and progressive croquet was played during the afternoon. _A sumptuous afternoon tea was_ served in the pavilion, the tables looking a picture decorated with choice blooms from ?.Irs A.lan’s garden. Mrs E. L. White (secretary of the association) made an excellent speech, telling of the workings of this body. Her explanations were so lucid and her remarks so much to the point that at the conclusion the Tnieri Club held a hurried meeting and decided then and there to affiliate with the Otago Association.
