MACANDREW ROAD EX-PUPILS

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The second annual meeting of the Macandrew Road School Ex-pupils’ Association and Social Club was held last evening in the school gymnasium, Mr J. W. Dove presiding over a fair attendance. The annual report stated that the executive had held various meetings, and the attendances had been satisfactory. " It still regretted that the membership was small, only fourteen members being enrolled during the year. It was hoped, however, that now the association badge was in vogue, ex-pupils would, on joining the association, receive something in return for their subscriptions. The socials held had again been successful in every way. It was pleasing to note that quite a number of elderly supporters continued to patronise the functions. The executive appreciated the services rendered by the committee controlling those functions, and thanked the various ladies who had assisted the kitchen staff. Again the association appreciated the manner in which the School Committee had rendered assistance and support. The School Committee, assisted by the association; had made improvements to the hall These improvements had been greatly appreciated by the ladies attending the socials. The association assisted the School Committee with the school picnic, held at Mosgiel, that function being very successful. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory credit balance. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the Chairman said that the association provided opportunities to fraternise and review old school days, while the older people were able to meet the younger generation. Time passed quickly, and it would not bo long before the jubilee of the school would be a thing of the past. He urged members to get other ex-pupils to join up with the association, as the membership was not very large, and only fourteen names bad been received since the last annual meeting. _ The executive was somewhat, optimistic, but when the jubilee period drew near it hoped to have an influx of ex-pupils. Those managing the socials had been rewarded for their labours, the functions proving beneficial from both social and financial points of view. Again the executive had been able to do something for the School Committee (which had given much valuable assistance to the association). Altogether they felt grateful for the position in which* they found themselves. Mr W. Wright, in speaking to the motion, said the executive could look back on a year of success. In auditing the balance-sheet he had found the work very easy, and had to congratulate the secretary (Mr J. A. Peat) on the way he had 'drawn it up. Glancing through the balance-sheet it would be noticed that the income depended on the socials and not on the sale of badges. This state of affairs was not good, and it would be better if they could find some other way in which to find finance. Mr A. T. M'lndoo also spoke to the motion, congratulating the executive on the success attending all its socials.

The motion was carried. Clause C was added to rule 5 as follows;—“ Any member of the executive who fails to attend two successive meetings without satisfactory reasons shall be deemed to forfeit his or her seat on the executive.” Rule 4a was deleted, and the following substituted The subscription shall bo 2s 6d on joining, and each member shall be provided with the association’s badge.” It was decided that the executive support the proposal to form an expupils’ tennis club, a meeting to lie called next week to ascertain the number willing to join, and confer with the School Committee. The election of office-bearers resulted :—Patron, the Rev. V. G. Bryan King (re-elected); president, Mr J. W. Dove fre-elected); vice-presidents, Messrs J. Bowie and G. W. C. Macdonald (re-elected); auditor, Mr W. Wright (re-elected); secretary aad treasurer, Mr J. A. Peat (re-elected); committee—Mrs H. Holland, Misses A. Mackie, F. Shelton, H. Wilson, and T. Marshall, Messrs W. Elliott, W. Ramsay, H. Dowland, E. Bennett, and C. Wilson.
