RADIO BROADCASTING

TO-HiGHT'S NEW ZEALAND PROGRAMMES It is thirty years to-day since the first New Zealand contingent sailed for the South African War, and memories of the campaign will be revived by a talk which Mr T. VV. Brown will give at 2YA at 7.25. The concert programme will be a broadcast of the second concert of the 1929 season of the Hutt Valley Choral Society, relayed from King George’s Theatre, Lower Hutt. The outstanding portion of the programme will be Coleridge-Taylor’s cantata, ‘A Tale of Old Japan/ the words tor which were written by Alfred Neves. Sir Edward Elgar’s ‘Songs of the Bavarian Highlands’ will also be sung by the society. The soloists will be Mrs F C. Tunley (soprano), Miss Constance Flaraank (contralto), Mr W. E. Saunders (tenor), and Mr Dellow (bass). The society performs under the conductorship oi Mr Ernest Jenner, A.R.A.M. The 2YA Oirchestrina, under Signor Truda, will provide the accompaniment to * A Tale of Old Japan.’ ‘ The Minnehaha Suite,’ a composition by Coleridge-Taylor, and Bizet’s ‘ L’Arlesienne ’ are also being played by the orchestrina. Mr Claude Tanner will play as a ’cello solo ‘Serenade,’ by Glazounow, Listeners to 3YA will hear the ringside descriptions of the boxing matches at the Civic Theatre. The outstanding events will be the Morgan-Carey and tho Campbell-Gardiner matches. The former is a professional contest, and the latter a challenge event between the two men wl>o fought the final in the heavy-weight class at the last championship meeting, when Gardiner won. At 7.30, at 4YA, “The Radio Man ” will talk about radio. The well-known light opera, ‘ Tho Chocolate Soldier,’ will be featured by the Majors’ Quartet. The supporting programme will be of a miscellaneous type. Included will be two sketches by Hie WinkelLanipen Radio Players. One of the sketches will be the highly dramatical ‘Danger.’ Effects play a*very important part. Silent day at IYA.
