FRIENDLY SOCIETY NOTES

ODDFELLOWS Meetings of following lodges were hold in the respective lodge rooms during the past fortnight:— Leith No, 4,—N.G. Bro.. N. H. Wilson presided over a fair attendance. Claims for sick payment were passed. Tho Visiting Committee’s report inchoated that members on the sick list were making good recovery. .Two candidates were initiated into tho order in an impressive manner by the officers of tho lodge. The half-yearly installation of officers was then carried cut efficiently by Grand Sire Bro. L. 1). Ritchie, assisted by Bro. M. K. Glover, P.D.D.G.M., Bro. J. MTvor, P.D.D.G.M., Bro. A. E. Carroll, P. 6 , and Bro. R. Kirkham, D.D.G.M.. The following officers were installed; — N.G.. Bro. E. K. Clarke; V.G., Bro. H. Jones; secretary, Bro. D. M. Miller; treasurer, Bro H. H. Johnson; warden. Bro. C. Bingham; conductor, Bro. A. Beveridge; chaplain, Bro. Snellcksz; R.S.S., Bro. E. Beecher; L. Bro. J. R. Kirkham; 1.G., Bro. A. H. Valentine. In responding to a vote of thanks G.S. Bro. L. D. Ritchie congratulated the various officers on their installation. On the request of the N.G. Bro. R. Kirkham, D.D.G.M., presented Bro. C. Bingham with a P.G, certificate from the lodge, and in doing so said it gave him great pleasure to trace Bro. Bingham’s activities in lodge work. This member had joined the juvenile branch of the order at quite an early age, and, passing through the chairs of the adult lodge with credit to himself and much satisfaction to the lodge. Bro. Bingham suitably replied, and assured the members ho would continue to assist the order in every possible manner. A distinguished visiting member in the person of P.D.D.G.M. Bro. A. E. Carroll, of Loyal Stanhope Lodge. Victoria, was accepted as an honorary member of Leith Lodge, this member expressing his great pleasure at the opportunity or joining up with a Dunedin lodge, and for the many fraternal expressions extended to him since his arrival. P.N.G. Bro. Valentine reminded those present of the “ old firms ” night at next meeting, and assured them that the principal and assistants would provide entertainment in a novel and appropriate manner. Maori Hill, No, 86.—N.G. Bro. H. Jones presided over a good meeting of members and visitors. Reports in connection with sick members were received and claims passed for payment. An invitation from Linden Lodge to attend its fifty-fourth anniversary was received" and accepted. The N.G. reported that he had attended the District Lodge to receive the Challenge Cup recently won by Maori Hill Lodge. He expressed the opinion that all the members appreciated the distinction of being the holders of such a coveted trophy, and trusted they would not now rest on their laurels, but endeavour to keep up the high standard they had attained. The following officers were duly installed: — N.G., Bro. A. W. Childs'; V.G., Bro. M. K. Glover; chaplain, Bro. H. Chettleburgh ; warden, Bro. Middleton; conductor, Bro. Goldthorpo; T.G., Bro. Beeby. In replying to a vote of thanks Grand Secretary Bro. Crookc said it was a great pleasure, and ho also felt : t an honour to install the officers of Maori Hill Lodge. He urged on the members loyaltv to their newly-elected officers. Regular attendance resulted in better meetings, and gave greater opportunity to increase tho standard of fraternity, which was a notable feature in Maori Hill. Each of the installing officers also extended concratnlations to tho newly-appointed officers. A special vote of welcome was extended to Bro. Carroll. P.D.D.G.M.. of Loyal Stanhope Lodge, Melbourne, who in responding expressed tho hope that some day he would be able to reciprocate the kindness winch he had experienced since his arrival in Dunedin. Supper was served by the Social Committee after the lodge closed.

Linden Lodge. No. 19.—There was a large and representative gathering at the fifty-fourth anniversary meeting, which was presided over by N-G Bro. M‘Hardy. _ The report from the Visiting Committee showed that there was a reduced number on the sick list. A r cport from Southern Cross Lodge. Th° N G. extend'H a very hearty welcome to Veteran P. G. Bro. Rroedle.v, a member of fiftvfour years. This member, who travelled from Tvaiapoi to be present, has been an active member, and has given continuous service since his initiation at the opening of the lodge fiftyfour years ago. The secretary reported having received a generous donation towards the cost of th© honours board recently erected. P.D.D.G.M. Bro. Walter Smith, in a neat speech, congratulated the lodge on attaining its fifty-fourth birthday, and referred to many of the worthy members of bygone days. He urged those present to emulate their example, and said it was most encouraging to see the young officers of Linden now conducting the business in a manner full of energy and zeal, proving themselves Worthy of the trust which had been committed to them. After the lodge was adjourned a large gathering of visiting • brothers and sisters of the Rebekah lodges fully appreciated the entertainment provided for them by an energetic committee. Bro. Snelleksz entertained the gathering with several recitations. The bulk of the time was occupied in dancing. Supper at a late hour terminated a very successful function. Hereweka, No, 60.—0 n the occasion of the half-yearly installation of the officers of ‘ this lodge a representative party from Dunedin lodges journeyed to Portobello by special bus . On arrival at the lodgeroom the following visiting lodges were admitted, and accorded a hearty reception: Pioneer, Leith, Unity, Linden, Maori Hill, 'St. Kilda, D.D.G.M. Bro. Kirkhara entered officially, and was received with lull honours. The installation ceremony was then proceeded with, the following Grand Lodge officers offi cinting; Installing master, PiG.M. Bro. A. H. Valentine; D.D.G.W. Bro. H. H. Johnson, D.D.G. Marshall, Bro., R. S. Kirkham, D.D.G. Chaplain, Bro. W. Smith, D.15.G. Guardian, Bro, M. K. Glover. The following Hereweka numbers were installed;—N.G., Bro. D. Seaton; V.G., Bro. Gill; Warden, Bro. Kempshed; Conductor., Bro. Brown; Chaplain, Bro. J. M'Kay; R.S.N.G., Bro. Broadley; L.S.N.d., Bro Anthony; 1.G., Bro. Rutherford. A vote of thanks to the installing officers for their trouble in visiting l?ortobello and also for the impressive and dignified exposition of the various

charges was carried unanimously. In reply, Bro. Valentine spoke in very appreciative terms of the work being cai i ,'ed on by Hereweka members, who hai high traditions to live up to. The rigbt spirit of OddfeilowshipV had permeated their past officers, and he felt that those whom he had the pleasure of installing would also prove a vital force in furthering the • tenets of the order. D.D.G.M. Bro. Kirkham extended congratulations on behalf of his dictrict ,and stressed the desirability of interlodge visits, pointing out tho various benefits that would accrue from them. Responses from visitors included P.G. Bro. J. Dunn (Pioneer), N.G. Bro. Clarke (Leith), P.D.D.G.M. Bro M‘lvor (Unity), N.G. Bro. M'Hardv (Linden), N.G. Bro. Childs (Maori "Hill), P.D.M. Bro. Beveridge (St. Kiida). Following the formal closing of the lodge a splendid _ social evening was enjoyed by the visitors, who were sumptuously treated in the usual Hereweka style. The singing of * Auld Lang Syne ’ and the arrival of the bus terminated a most enjoyable evening. Unity, No. 16.—A very interesting and fraternal gathering tok place at Unity Hall, when D.D.G.M. Bro. Randall and officers from Clutha District attended to carry out the installation of officers. The regular business of the lodge was soon disposed of under the chairmanship of N.G. Bro. A. Holley, and sharp at S p.m. the lodge was ready to receive the visitors, who were accompanied and suitably introduced by Bro. Kirkham, D.D.G.M., South Otago District. Visiting, members were accorded a very hearty reception. Among the visitors were D.G.M. Bro. G Sommerville and Grand Secretary Bro. W. F. Crooke. The following officers from Clutha District officiated: D.D.G.M., Bro. Randall; D.D.G.W., Bro. Sommerville; D.D.G, Chaplain, Bro. Bassett: D.D.G. Secretary, . Bro. Wallace: D.D.G. Treasurer, Bro. Miller; D.D.G. Guardian, Bro. Morris, A very impressive ceremony was carried out by the visitors, the Unity members installed being as follows: N.G., Bro. Fergus; V.G., Bro. Bennett; Secretary, Bro. Homan; Treasurer, Bro. Milne; Warden, Bro. Scott; Conductor, Bro. M'Donald; Chaplain, Bro. Campbell; R.S.S., Bro. Smith; L.S.S., Bro. Sudden; R.S.N.G. Bro Bolton; L.S.N.G., Bro. M‘Cleary; R.S.V.G., Bro. Bowler; L.5.V.6., Bro Jones. In response to a vote of thanks Bro Randall, D.D.G.M., made a stirring appeal to members to live up to their obligations, and urged _ every member to play a part in fostering the spirit of fraternity and goodwill, which is so necessary in the successful working of a lodge. He gave a very eloquent and graphic description of society when civilisation was in its infancy, drawing attention to the attitude of different races towards each other, and the growing need.of everyone to cultivate the spirit of friend ship. Bro. Sommerville and Bro. Crooke conveyed congratulations to the new|y-installed officers. D.D.G.M. Bro. Kirkham, on behalf of the lodge, presented Bro. Bennett with a Past Grand’s certificate, and expressed the hope that the progress Bro. Bennett had made would encourage, him to seek further distinction in the order. Bro. Morris (Pioneer), Bro. Clarke (Leith), Bro. M'Hardy (Linden), and Bro, Beveridge (St. Kiida) responded on behalf of their lodges, several members expressing the hope that it might be possible to make a similar gathering an annual fixture.

GOOD TEMPLARS

The fortnightly meeting of the Star of Freedom Lodge, No. 5, 1.0.G.T., was held in the Presbyterian Sunday School Hall, Kaikorai, on Monday last, O.T. Bro Scott presiding over a large gathering of members. A large number of visitors, including brothers from H.M.S- Dunedin, were also present, following on the institution of the Star of Victory Juvenile Temple, which took place the same evening at 7 p.m. At the request of the chief templar, Bn . Dalton, G.C.T., occupied the chair. Two candidates were initiated, and a letter expressing best wishes for the success of the new temple was received from Sister Giles, on behalf of Hope of Caversham Lodge The programme fo. the evening was in charge of Sisters Williamson, Flett, and J. and A. Duff. The following contributed items-—Sisters Williamson, J. and A. Duff, D Sell (quartet), Sister Mrs M‘Kenzio (song). Sister S._ Warrington (reading), Sister Tappin (recitation), Sister Doris Miller (recitation), Sister D. Bell (song) The thanks of the lodge we-<- accorded to the visitors and all who had contributed to the evening’s entertainment. The following responded:—Bro Ansley (H.M.S. Dunedin) conveyed the greetings of the Australian and other lodges he had visited, and congratulated the lodge on the opening of the new juvenile temple; I)ro. Dun (H.M.S. Dunedin) also expressed his pleasure at being present al the opening of the temple, and conveyed greetings from Endeavour Lodge, No. S“2, Auckland; Bro. Cromarty expressed best wishes and greetings on behalf of All Nations Lodge, No. 13 Port Chahners % The All Nations Lodge, No. 13, 1.0.G.T., met on Thursday last, Bro. Half Campbell presiding over the meeting. Several members spoke on the opening of the Beacon Juvenile Temple, and four members were elected to the committee. It was decided to pay an official visit to the Pride of Waitati Lodge on November 4. A committee was then set up to deal with the programme for the guide, and 'to take charge of_ the arrangements for Hallowe’en Night. The following items were then rendered by the members Songs by Bros. 11. Campbell, Mathison, and Smillic, Sisters Cook, Mathison, Luscombe, and Daggie; dialogue by Bros. A. and W. Wad©: recitations by Sisters Price, Farqnnarson, Smillie, and Wade, Bros. Cromarty and Smith The Hope of Caversham Lodge, No. 128, held its weekly meeting in the Baxter Hall, Marion street, Caversham, Siste Mrs Giles C.T., presiding over a large attendance of members and visitors from the Rescue Lodge, No 105. Hope of Dunedin Lodge No 155, and Star of Freedom Lodge, No. , who were given a cordial welcome D.C.T. Bro. Dickerson paid his quarterly visit, and spoke a tew words about the progress of the lodge. Tho following members responded and conveyed greetings of their lodges:— Bros Dickerson, D.C.T., Sister Dray (Rescue), Bro. Williams (Hope of Dunedin), and Bro. Scott (Star of Freedom). On© candidate was proposed for membership., Bro. Hilton reported on the health of Sister Thomas, who is now out of hospital' Bro. Dalton gave . fine report of the opening of the Star of Victory Temple at Kaikorai on Monday, October 14. As the programme wrs'ii the hands of Bro. A new juvenile temple of the Internationa' Order of Good Templars was instituted on Monday night, October 14, at the Kaikorai Presbyterian Sunday School Hall, Bro. Hilton, D.S.J.W., being the instituting offi-

cer, assisted py tho officers of the Star of the South Juvenile Temple. At roll car twenty-eight juveniles were ready for the initiation ceremony, which was conducted by Bro. Hilton, who had the assistance of Sister Mrs lies and Bro. E. J lies as marshals. After the institution of the temple and the initiation of its members, the eleetion of officers took place, Sister D. Sell acting as secretary and the following officers were elected: —Chief templar, Bro. Douglas Smith; vicetemplar, Bro. Alex. Miller; secretary, Sister Jessie Hamilton; chaplain, Sister Bessie Paterson; financial secretary, Sister Bessie Miller; treasurer, Sister Sinclair; marshal, Bro. W. Mundell; sentinel, Sister Bertha Gaul; guard, Sister Mario Holden; past chief templai, Bro Cecil Brown. These officers were installed by Bro. Dalton, G. who briefly addressed the children and presented the prize to the winner of the competition for tho best name, the name chosen being the Star of Victory, and the winner being Sister Gaul. This prize was given by Bro. Todd, of the Star of Freedom Ixidge, No. 5. Several visitors from sister Lodges, including brethren from H. Dunedin, conveyed greetings from their lodges and wished the new temple every success. Bro. Sell conveyed the thanks of the temple to grand chief templar (Bro. Dalton) and to district superintendent of juvenile work (Bro Hilton) for their assistance to tho new temple, and the thanks of tho temple were also due to these brethren for gifts received. Hie Hope of Dunedin ■ Lodge, No. 155, 1.0.G.T., held its weekly meeting on Wednesday in Good Templar Hall. Princes street Bro. H. Gore presided over a good attendance of members. Bro J Churchill resoonded on behalf of Rescue Lodge. A candidate was initiated and welcomed. A_ motion of sympathy was passed to Sister South in her indisposition. At the conclusion of business, the sisters provided each Bro. 'with a surprise packet. The Silver Star Juvenile Temple, No. 9, met tile same evening, Sister Mrs Anthony presided over a large attendance of members. Two candidates were initiated.
