A well-known conjurer one day visited a small village in a certain part of Lancashire. After performing many astonishing tricks he asked for a halfpenny, which a collier lent him. The conjurer then said he would turn it into a sovereign. Ho did so, as the people thought, and handed it round for inspection. When it was passed to the collier he coolly eke ted it, and said to the astonished conjurer: “ Will tha’ change another?” During his vacation a lawyer met an old friend in the village, and their conversation drifted to a discussion of the natives.
