MEAT PROFITS IN ENGLAND

BIG INCREASE IN THE BUTCHERS' SHOPS A general review of the profits earned and the prices charged by retain businesses in England was issued by the Food Council in London recently. The Council examined the accounts of a number of private traders, limited companies, and co-operative societies, with a turnover of approximately £19,000,000 for the years 1926 and 1927. From the figures submitted, it _appeared that up to the year 1927-28 there was a progressive increase in thc\ incomes of retail butchers. The year 1927-28 was, however, not so profitable, and the incomes of London butchers were brought back approximately to the level of 1922, but even the reduced profits represented an estimated return on captial of nearly 25 per cent. “The results of our inquiry confirm tho conclusions of the Linlithgow Committee and the Royal Commission on Food Prices, that the financial position of retail butchers has not only improved since before the war, but has improved out of proportion with the increase in the general cost of living.” In the last five years there had been a remarkable increase-; in the number of retail butchers’ shops.
