SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS

OTAGO BRANCH The. annual meeting of thc_ local branch of the New Zealand Society ot Accountants was held in the University' Club rooms on Thursday, Mr J. G. Patterson presiding. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report, referred to the various activities of the .branch during, the past year, the -principal ovent being the animal meeting of the society in Dunedin in August, with the scries’of entertainments for visiting accountants.

Mention was made of the election oi the Hon. W. B. Taverner to the House of Representatives, and subsequently to the rank of Cabinet Minister.

The syllabus for 1929 comprised three lectures and two special luncheon meetings, the lecturers being Messrs J. C. Dykes (Bank of New. Zealand), T. D. IV. Brebrier (H.M. Customs iDepartment), and E. J. Asdcrsoii (solicitor). The speakers at the luncheon meetings wore Dr W. N. Benson and Dr G. E. Thompson. The election of Mr T. G. Bnckoll to a, seat on the council of the society, vice Mr P. Barr (resigned), was also mentioned.

Tho chairman expressed appreciation of the work done by Mr A. Thomas as official correspondent to tho journal, and thanked him on bohali of the local members.

Keen interest was displayed in the election of a new committee, several names being received. The ballot resulted in the appointment of Messrs A. Thomas, R. C. Burgess, G. E. Lindley, S. P. Cameron. E. R. Grace, G. S. Kirby. Mr J. T. Hamann was elected honorary auditor.

Tim, chairman announcodthnt a convention would be held in Wellington in February next to which all accountants were invited. Extra delegates were asked for from each district, and a ballot was taken to elect representatives from Otago. The following were appointed :—Messrs S. P Cameron, A. Thomas, G. S. Kirby, and J. A. Robinson. Mr G. W. Reid fully explained the changes to bo brought about in the syllabus of examinations. A hearty vote of thanks to the chairman for ids services during the past year was carried by acclamation.
