NOVELIST POLICE CHIEF
CAN CATCH CROOKS OH PAPER, BUT The old-tinio heavy-footed police detective occasionally outwits the brilliant amateur, at least in real life. Some time ago a distinguished writerof detective fiction was appointed chief of police of a small New Jersey town. A hold-up took place, and a bank messenger was killed after being robbed of 10,000 dollars. The public looked to the brilliant novelist whose polished tales, replete with quotations from Greek philosophers in the original, have impressed as much as they have puzzled his American readers, to exercise his talents in real life and catch the murderers. When the murderers were not forthcoming a typical, cigar-smoking, bowler-hatted regular detective was called in. Two. men were quickly under arrest and charged the crime.
