MOTOR SHOW
NEW MODELS AT OLYMPIA HO RADICAL DEPARTURES Press Aisomtion—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, October 17. Three hundred cars, embodying the latest chassis aud body Avork improvements, from every important manufacturer in the AA’orld, AAere exhibited at Olympia at the opening of a nine-days’ slioav to-day. The outstanding fact is that no secrets have been sprung on the motoring public. EA'ery. model represents a modification of proved types. The cheapest. seA r on .horse-power class is represented by the Triumph, the Austin, and the Morris, in the neighbourhood of £l5O. The most expensive is the forty-five horse-power American saloon at £3,460. . . ■ It is interesting to note that Britis.i manufacturers are joining America in the race for medium-poii'ered, mediumpriced six-cylinder cars. More than half of those exhibited are sixes, 2S per cent, are fours, and 18 per cent, eights. While there is nothing in the British, American, or Continental cars showing radical departures, the cars have never been so ivell dressed. The fabric bodies hold their own, but the coachwork definitely returns, and challenges the former’s supremacy. There is an infinite variety of colour schemes. Some ot the smartest cars are the seven horsc-poWer class, in which British supremacy remains unchallenged. _ The safety note is predominant, and is mainly manifest in the lowering the gravity centre, imsplinterahle glass, and signalling uevices. A striking feature is the almost universal adoption of chromium plating, and several firms have carried the process to wire ivlicels. Artillery disc wheels are in a definite minority. Upholstery, even in the cheapest cars, showed a big improA’ement, and theie. is a tendency towards the pneumatic A-nriety in medium-priced cars. -1 He Hillman. Humber, Morris. Rover, and Standard cars make a hold hid against the American cars. One of; the most notable features is that the limit seems to have been reached in pnee reduction in every variety.—Australian Iress Association.
