SYDNEY, October IS. At the declaration of the North Sydney poll to-day, Mr W. M. Hughes, who defeated Dr Nott by over 12,000 votes, saidr—“This contest will remain uppermost in my mind. 1 stand, as one who always thought of Australia and its ideals, and while the Labour .Party stands for these principles it will have my support.” “ BREAKAWAY ” DEFEATED. SYDNEY, October 18. A message has arrived from Western Australia saying that the endorsed Nationalist candidate, Mr W. M. Nairn, has won the Perth seat, which was held by Mr E. A. Mann, one of the Government “ breakaways.” MESSAGE TO AMERICAN BANKERS. NEW YORK, October IS. Mr W. L. Baillieu, of Melbourne, gave tho following statement to the American Press regarding the Australian election: “ It has been suggested to me hero that baukers are in lear that the industries will be disturbed. This suspicion arises from a ivrong idea. Two things are certain: The Labour Party will put a lot of drive into the development of the country and the secondary industries and it will seek a safe line in finance. The city of London has accepted Mr MacDonald’s GoA-emment witli complete equanimity and I feel sure that the cities of New York and London can with equal confidence accept the Labour administrations in Australia.”—Australian Press Association.
