A MUNICIPAL GOLF COURSE.

. ■ TO THU EDITOR. Sir, —I noticed a recent interview in your paper' advocating the establishment of a municipal golf links in Dunedin. Well, sir, I would strongly support such a project, but do-nob let us make tho mistake of chloosing the wrong site. Having played golf for niany years, not only in Dunedin, but also on all tho principal courses in Australia, 1 am convinced ‘that we have tho making of one of the most beautiful courses in the world.. I refer to tho sandhills from /St. Clair to Lawyer’s Head.; All the land where the lupins are planted will grow beautiful grass, and the bunkers would be of sand, which is the natural form of bunker. I have walked over this country many times and marvelled at its natural adaptability for golf. Such a course would overshadow Balmacewen aiid St. Clair, both of which clubs have been compelled to spend/thousands of pounds in making unnatural bunkers and in building courses and greens on hard clay land, totally nnsuited for golf. AH the best courses in Australia are built ou sand dunes, and what a joy it is to play your shots off the springy turf, whih wet or fine weather makes no difference to your game. Such would be the position with'a municipal links at St. Kilda. I therefore ask those gentlemen interesting themselves in the project to make no mistake when solecting the site for a municipal golf course, . At St. Kilda you could charge 2s per round, and I venture to say the links would have their carrying capacity fully tested, and tho corporation, or the Domain Board —whichever controls the sandhills —would very soon make the project a remunerative proposition.-—I am, etc., August 16. Ex-cham piox.
