Cabinet has approved of the appoint ment of Mr M. Dennehy to the position of Assistant General Manager of Railways in succession to Air J. S Hunteiv who was appointed Commissioner of Transport some time ago.—Press Association telfigram. Mr J. M‘C. Dickson was a passenger, for Timani by this morning’s express, Mr IV. H. Dagger, Conciliation Commissioner, travelled to Christchurch by the through express to-day. The Hon. T. K. Sidey left for Wellington by this morning’s express. A cablegram from Sydney announces tbe death at Mandang of Mr IV. V. Fitzgerald, an explorer botanist, and geologist who began his mining career at the Otago School_ of Mines, and in later years was associated with geological expeditions to North-west Australia and Hew Guinea. Mr Fitzgerald is remembered in Dunedin He came here from somewhere north—the West Coast it is thought—and attended classes at; the Otami School of Mines under Professor Park, but did not graduate here.
