STARVING UNEMPLOYED
CONDITIONS IN AUSTRALIAN CITIES
THREATS OF FOOD RIOTS
RELIEF MEASURES URGED. Press,Astociation—By Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, August 14. Trade depression, which is resulting in unemployment, is causing serious concern in Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, and reports are coming in every day of men women, and children starving A Salvation Army officer at Bathurst has warned the authorities that tho suffering among a percentage of the poorer classes is so acute that there is grave danger _of _ sonie men causing food riots if relief is not forthcoming for their families. A deputation of Trades Hall officials at Melbourne to-day interviewed the Premier (Sir William' M'Pherson) on this subject,'and frankly told him that unless there is some change in the outlook very soon there would be trouble, whether tho Premier liked it or not. One delegate stated that it was only logical to assume that tho men would not starve all tHo time while there existed others who had plenty. The Premier promised to consult manufacturers and builders’ organisations, but warned the deputation that he would not tolerate strikes, which, he contended, were in a large measure responsible for the present deplorable economic and industrial conditions.
