SUPPLY FOR HIGH LEVELS FINANCE COMMITTEE TO REPORT At last night’s mooting ot tlic City Council the question of .the water.supply lor the high Novels of the city was held over for farther consideration. The clause in the report of the Water Committee reads as follows; The matter of improving the water supply from Sullivan dam to the high level service reservoir lias been under careful consideration for some time, • Tho existing 12in cast iron main is now inadequate to cope .with the demand, particularly in emergencies, and it has the further defects of (a) being a single link m the chain of supply, and (b) being situate in exposed positions, and therefore liable to mishap. In order to provide adequately for maintaining the supply to the high levels, and particularly hi view of prospective increase in population" in the higher residential districts, your committee is of the opinion that it is necessary, and accordingly recommends that an additional main of 14in diameter be laid from Sullvan dam to the Bbta street reservoir, at a total estimated cost of £44,000. Tho cost of future alterations of the outlet from the dam and the position of the intakes on the west branch and Morrison’s Creek is mot included As no financial provision has been made for the expenditure tho matter has been referred to the Finance Committee for report in terms -of the Standing Orders. This main'is fo> the purpose of remedying defects in the existing distribution system, amd will enable necessary im- „ provemeuts to !>e effected in the supplies to Maori Hill, Hoslyn, Mornington, Caversham. and Anderson’s Bay. On the same matter the Finance Committee reported'; “ The matter of the financial bearing of the Water Committee’s recommendation to incur an expenditure of £44.000 on the construction of a 14in main from Sullivan dam is under consideration, and it is hoped to present a report thereon to next ordinary meeting of the council.” The Chairman of the Finance Committee (Cr ClarlO said that his committee required certain information before it was possible to give a report which would be of any value as far as the financial situation was concerned. The discussion was accordingly deferred till the next meeting of the council.’
