ADDITIONAL ATTRACTIONS Art-lovers are _ realising more . and more that the winter is a good tjme to choose for study in the Dunedin Art Gallery at Logan Park. The interior is adequately lit, comfortably warmed, and in every way made pleasant, and the society has its reward for thus studying the interests of the public in finding the regular attendance increasing. Some choice, treasures have been recently added. Thanks to Mr P. L. Halsted. four works by leading Australian painters are now on view. Mr Halsted paid a visit to Australia a little while ago, and tliero bought these four pictures, which he lias consented to lend to the gallery for a week or ten days. They arc of real merit, and in themselves repay a visit to the gallery. One is a study in oils, entitled ‘ Sunlight Impressions. It is of a ravine and bare hillside after being burnt off. Tho artist , Arthur Streeton. has admirably depicted, with line boldness, the play of light, and m all ways the painting is captivating and educative. The society has lor some time owned another of Streeton’s works, presented by Sir Lindo Ferguson, and this new one adds to the artist’s reputation. Another of Mr Halsted’s temporary bestowals is 1 The Dolomites, from the Adriatic,’ by Norman Lloyd. The expansive foreground of wrinkled sea is delightfully painted, and with the distant snowy peaks and the fort in the middle distance an admirable effect in blues and greens is produced, Hans Hayrnsn is the painter of a. remarkable study in water colours of ‘ White Gums. It s distinctive feature is its simplicty, and vsitovs are sure to observe the texture of tho trees, for they are real wood, not putty. The other lent piece is also writer colour entitled. Nedson lias also had tne pleasure of hanging several further attractions to the permanent collection, all worth studying. In Room E will be found a .very clever water colour depicting a Loudon church in wmtei, painted by F. Emanuel, this was bequeathed to the gallery by the late Mr c. W. S. Chamberlain. Jhe v"nti \ feeling is in every part of it, also the London atmosphere. . . _ -, To the collection of prints m Room 1 are added a good copy of the celebrated engraving, the Death ot Ar - son,’ that is from the, original wall painting in the Westminster Palace, also a copy of ‘ Wellington aiub Blueher Meeting After Waterloo. _ Both these are given by the trustees in Mr Chamberlain’s estate. A third acquisition m the same class is ‘The Pursuit of Pleasure,’ bv Sir J. Noel Patou. Miss Wishart is the donor of this engraving. -V very choice piece of pottery, the subject ‘The,Alchemist ’ by Charles J. Noke, is presented by Mr John Shoitei on behalf of Mr L. J. E. Hooper, ot the Doulton Works. Three striking and valuable coloured woodprints by Madame Norbertino Bresslern-Rotb, of Prague, deserve special mention. They were obtained through the Women s Club, having been sent for an exhibition in the club’s rooms. Faultless draughtsmanship and vivid colouring are employed to set off wonderful faithfulness in depicting animal life in these punts. Madam Roth is commissioned by the authorities of her native State, Czechoslovakia, to illustrate children s hooks for the national schools.
