VAUXHALL POWER BOAT AND SAILING CLUB

SUCCESSFULLY OPENED It was a big event in Upper Harbomboating circles, the opening or Dm recently formed Vauxhall Power Boat and Sailing Club on Saturday afternoon. The weather was perfect, yachts were favoured with a good iulJ-sad southeasterly breeze, and the outboard motor boat racing was most spectacular. There was a very large attendance ot the public, and a fair number of old yachtsmen were present. At the opening ceremony Mr W. >-.ell (commodore) was in the chair, and before calling on the first speaker read a list of apologies from people unable to attend. He said that the club was starting on a new venture in boating, which they hoped would be successful. The club’s patron (Mr A. Burt) said that with the assistance of the many experienced sailing men connected with the club it should be very successful, and he would be ready to help m any way possible. , . Mrs W. Sell (wife of the commodore) unfurled the dub’s flag on the houseboat mast, and Mr Burt declared the club duly opened Mr H. E. Moller (chairman or the Otago Harbour Board) said that tuo club had been formed to cater for motor boats and small sailing watt. 1* or the past two weeks the Harbour Board stall had been employed in carrying out improvements in the vicinity ot yauxha.ll. The club could not wish for finer officials than had been elected, and special mention was made of the selection or Mr F, Stunner as secretary. A great want had been felt lor a dub in the upper harbour, and the forming of the Vauxhall Club would mean a great deal to town sailing enthusiasts. The club would always have the assistance of the Harbour Board within reasonable limits. , , .... Mr J. T. Paul (president of too Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association) said that the club would help a great deal to further the sport m0 * taring and yachting, and the Otago Yacht and Motor Boat Association would do what it could to assist the Vauxhall Club in promoting this, the finest, pastime and sport. ' Mr W. 0. Martin (Broad Bay Boating Club) said that he had olten wondered why a dub had not been ionned in the Vauxhall district, and now that there had been one opened it had a better chance than any- other club of going ahead quickly. It was handy to town, and it had a good band ot officials. He wished the club every sue<JOSS. Mr T. H. Harridgo, an old follower of sailing, said that in early days that district had been a large swimming pool. The new club s course was used loi the racing, and the competing boats were in full view of the spectators throughout the various events. A number of folk had charge of t e afternoon tea, which was provider! 101 the visitors, and during the afternoon the West Harbour Brass Band (under tlio conductorship of Mr C. Davie) was ■present. . . . On Bafnnlav evening a social function was held,'when another largo number of Huh members and visitors spent a. pleasant time. Complimentary speeches were made by Messsr A. Burt and E. A. Gibson (commodore ol Die North-east Harbour Boating Club), and Crs C. W. lTavward and B. &. Black. The priz.es for the winners ot Die ’afternoon races were presented by Mr W Sell Items were contributed by Messrs A. Lnngley. E. Johnson, and W. Ruffe!!, and Misses G.
