OR BLACK ON WAIPORI The meeting at South Dunedin on Monday evening ol Cr R. S. IS lac* s friends and supporters ol his candidature for mayoral honours was a very large and enthusiastic one. Mr Smilev, the chairman, in introducing Mr Ti lack, pointed out that Jus thirteen years’ service in the ban* would he oi value, as would his many years us exporter and merchant. Mr lilack was a much travelled man. and this must greatly add to his knowledge. He was well known in many circles, a strong Oddfellow, and was keen on helping in any way he could to improve the lot oi his isllow men. Mr lilack. on rising, was greeted with applause. He thanked those present for their reception, and briefly addressed the meeting, stressing Hie importance of retaining Waipori and extending its possibilities in the utmost,. He said he would ho in favour of’selling on 1 v it an agreement could ho entered into for 999 years, that the picsent cost would not be increased to the consumer, and that sufficient pov.oi would be guaranteed tor all luturc requirements; such agreement to be beyond any political power to upset. Dunedin, Mr Ulack pointed out, has the cheapest power in the dominion, and we must do our best to see t.iat she retains this proud position. V\'th regard to the ward system, Mr Black was in favour of it only so far as election purposes were concerned. He lelt it would assist the lesser-known candidate to secure municipal honours, but after being elected he felt that every councillor should represent the whole city and not any particular area. Mr Peat moved: “That this largo and representative gathering ol the electors of South Dunedin heartily supports the candidature of Mr R. S. Black, ; and pledges itself to do its utmost to J return Cr’Black as mayor of Dunedin.” This was seconded by Mrs Rusloii, and carried unanimously.
