ANTARCTIC WASTES
MOUNTAIN PARTY STILL SILENT DOG TEAMS READY TD SEARCH [By Rdsseuu Owen.] Copyright, 1928, by the ‘ New York Times ’ Company and ‘ St. Louis Post-Despatch. ’ All Rights for Publication -Reserved Throughout the World. Wireless to ‘ New York Times.’ BAY OF WHALES, March 19. With continued silence on the part of Gould. Balehon, and June, Commander Byrd prepared to take oil in tho first few fine hours we have had for many days, but the motor failed to start. This is tho first time that it has baulked in all the weeks that we have been here. When the adjustments were made a high wind and darkness approaching prevented the flight. There is a bare chance that Commander Byrd may be able to go today. Dog teams will start in a few hours. Tho preparations have been completed for the journey, which at best will be extraordinarily difficult. We all still believe that the silence is duo to damage to the radio. None who have flown over the mountains have seen anything resembling a. crevasse. The snow slopes are firm, and the mountain sides arc drifted smooth.
