‘TOOT ATKINS’

A film which fully the progress of British pictures is a British International picture, ‘Tommy Atkins,' which will ho screened at the Em jure Theatre on Friday. The production, which was made with the co-operation of the British Army Council, gives a picturisation of military activities, the services of the 2nd Battalion ol: the Somerset Regiment, the Ist Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, and the Ist Battalion of the Argylo and Sutherland Highlanders having been provided by the Army Council for the lighting scenes. In tho role of Tommy Atkins Walter Butler gives a convincing portrayal, while Lilian Hall-Davis is charming as tho heroine of tho story. Excellent characterisations are also given by Henry Victor and Shaylo Gardner, who complete the list of principals. At the commencement of tho story a small fores of Ilritish soldiers in the Sudan is cut to pieces by natives, the only survivors being tho six-year-old sou of the C.O. and his servant, Mason, who takes tho boy hack to England. The boy’s grandfather, the Earl of Petherton, dies, and the title is assumed by a younger son in the belief that his brother and nephew have died. When ho learns the truth from Mason he decides to suppress tho fact, and Harold, the real heir, is brought up with his cousin Victor and his uncle’s ward, Ruth. Victor becomes an officer in tho Army, while Harold enters the church. Both fall in love witli Ruth, and she becomes engaged to Victor- Harold resigns his living, and enters the Army, ana just after he lias left Victor hears of his father’s deception, and that ho is not the next heir to the title. Victor goes abroad with his regiment, and the two cousins meet again. In a frontier war Victor is fatally wounded, but just before ho dies is able to tell the truth to Harold, who eventually returns to England to resume his title and find consolation in the love of Ruth.
