MOTORISED SKIS

The idea of equipping a pah' of skis with a motet originated with H. E. Pearson, of Wayzata, Minu. (says the ‘ San Francisco Glirouiclo ’). 'The Two skis are connected and held parallel by a platform secured to their runners. Secured to the forward part, of the platform is a standard provided at its oaso with ears in which one end of an arm is pivoted. The arm extends horizontally lengthwise of the platform rearward, ami has •it its rear end a fork in which a driving wheel is mounted. The wheel carries around its circumference a series of blades to dig into snow and help propel th eskis. To speak with greater exactness, the wheel carries two such series of circumferential blades, between which is placed a rubber ring of slightly greater diameter to engage a hard icy surface. The wheel is driven ,by a singlecylinder gasoline engine connected by a belt to the wheel axle. The engine is mounted on the above- mentioned arm, and is thus free t rise and fall with the arm and the driving wheel, allow/ ing tlie wheel to accommodate itself to irregularities of the surface over which .the skis are moving.
