THE NEW “TALKIES.”
XO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I see by an announcement in the ‘Star’ of the Llth inst. that a certain theatre in Dunedin expects to be screening “talkies” on tbc Western Electric System within a month. The Regent lias already announced that it will bo tbo first theatre in this town to present “talkies” for the Western Electric plant, within four to five weeks. I am now authorised by Mr Beaumont >Smith, managing director of J. C. Williamson Films, to confirm this statement, and to announce the early screening of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's gigantic “talkie” picture, ‘ White Shadows of the South Seas.’ T would point out that whilst there arc other systems of reproduction of “talkies,” the Western .Electric, now being installed in all the large city theatres of Australia, is the system that lias made “talkies” the sensational success they arc, and is the only system that has so far proved itself. The actual installation at the Regent will depend on how soon the electrical staff will ho available for wiring, but according to our terms of agreement with the Western Electric Company the Regent will he the first and exclusive theatre in Dunedin to install the Western Electric moviotouc-vita-phonc plant, and no other theatre in this city can secure this installation for some time after. I ncidcntall.Vf the final cost of the Western Electric installation will exceed £5.1)00. Yon will readily understand why priority of installation is a matter of such importance to us.—J am, etc., E. R. CIUIKXFLKIJ), Manager Regent Then ire. March IS.
