THE EVENTS DESCRIBED (.Special to the ‘ Stau.’] 'i'll© public opened proceedings badly by making Gala Day u strong lavourite for the Second High-weight Handicap, but after losing a little ground at the start he was never up near the leaders, and finished well back. The winner. Vivo, was always one of the front division, and led into the straight from Inferno, Monetize, and Break o’ Day- The last named was the only one of these to trouble "Vivo, who had to--be hard ridden at the end to beat him by a bare length. Jmarosebnd made a promising forward move nearing the post, but finished a moderate third close on two lengths away. Glena Bay--was next, in front ot Clarendon, Gala Day, Masher, and Inferno, with fcwoopalong last. « # » » Toxeuma practically monopolised the belting in the Hutt Handicap, and he proved to be the best proposition of the meeting. He was running along in front with Borsalene until the fourfurlong post was reached, and then put a"sffetch of daylight between him and tire field, having a six-length advantage from Borsalene, Ruanui, and Kilbronsyth. When heads were turned homewards lie increased his lead .in the run to the post, and won with ridiculous ease by ten lengths Horn Kilbronsyth, who finished on the best of the remainder to bent Buaimi by a length. Tidal was next, and then came Borsalene. Ladykiller, Twink, and Black Mint. * * * ♦ The contest for the Treiilham Cold Cup crested intense enthusiasm. Nightmarch was favourite Irom the opening ot the machine, and wound up with 'considerably more tickets than were entrusted to Kapler, with another big break to the Kapine-Joy King bracket. Joy King went out to make the pace from the start, and led past the stand with a three lengths’ lead frqra Nightmarch and Rapier, together with the other pair close up. Joy King held his advantage to the far turn, where he went out from the’rails, and let Nightmarch through. The latter then opened up a break, ot two lengths from Rapine, with Rapier moving, up on the outside. Nightmarch kept his place to the straight entrance, apd ; Rj>pier had Rapine beaten- As 1 he-distance post was in sight Rapier crept up to Nightmarch, and the latter’s rider had recourse to get to work on his mount. It was seen at this stage that Nightmarch was beaten, and Rapier passed him. The race appeared tp be his. but his supporters received a rude shock at the instigation of Count Cavour, who executed one of his old finishing runs, and made the final tussle more exciting than a moment before promised. Rapier, however, responded to his rider’s final effort with the whip, and crossed the line with a neck advantage. Nightmarch weakened into' third place two lengths clear of Rapine, with Joy King tailed off. The disappointment of the race, of course, w'fis.’. Nightmarch, who had everything to his liking, but the last furlong found him in distress. The cause may have been the lack of much long work prjo'r to the race, whereas Rapier bad tire,'benefit of not only more solid but three recent hard faces. Count Cavoilr, who carried only a twelfth part of the machine total, narrowly missed creating a surprise. The latter was never far away from the leader, and only appeared to settle down to really serious work inside the distance. This "was his most pleasing effort since he ran second to Rapier in the Auckland Cup, and it is evident that on a

Amor Beats Pink Note

track to suit him as lie encountered in this vneo he has not degenerated as much as considered in so far as extreme journeys are concerned. Rapine showed none of his old-time brilliancy, while Joy King was hopelessly out of the contest half a mile from home. * * # * The result of the Mnritai Handicap was not too palatable to investors, as the favourite, Zippor, was not ridden to the best advantage. He and Hnrly Burly rushed to the front shortly after the start, from which Paper Boy, Spearmiss, and First Ruler got badly away. The two leaders were together at the straight entrance three lengths in Iront of Goodwill, Rabbi, Stanchion, and The Warden. Hnrly Burly retiree! when faced for the post, and Zippor was left in charge. He ran about a good deal, and Goodwill rushed through on the rails, and soon placed the issue beyond doubt, receiving the verdict by a length irom Rabbi, who got up in the last stride to beat the favourite by half a head. Kory Mor was next followed by Full Mark, Bissac, and Roi do Val, with the remainder strung out.

Ceremony was made a good favourite tor the Pad tic .Handicap, and proved himself a class above the opposition by recording a comfortable victory. He was one of the first to show oiit from the start, and followed Courtlike and Tea Queen into the straight, with Hot Spring and Equitnnt at the head of the remainder. Once straightened up for the post Ceremony had the race in hand and without being seriously troubled won by a length from Eqnitant, who finished on well to beat Tea Queen by half a length for second money. I’olyxena was close up in fourth place in front of First Money, Emotion, Boynl Parade, and Gay Duke. The winner had on easy task and promises to he at rt short price in his Manawatu engagements. Night Lad had every chance but failed badly over the last furlong. Disorder ran wide at the bond and finished well hack in the nick. * * * * The Autumn Handicap was responsible for the surprise of the day, the lightly-fancied Amor practically winning from end to end. He Mas the first to show out from the start, hut White Fang shot to the front going out of the straight and soon opened a big break from Amor, with the rest of the field in close order. Amor again joined White Fang at the far furlong post- and held a slight advantage from him. Pink Note. Bright Glow, and Pegaway at the homo turn. Amor was first into the straight from Pink Note, Pegaway, and White Faiur, and although resolutely challenged by Pink Note throughout the run home he stuck to his task to recordji meritorious victory by a head. Trcsbnm put, in good -work in the last stages and got up to snatch third money from White Fang on the pod. Star Area was next clear of Pegaway and Bright Glow, r J his was Amor s first important win, and ho emerged with honours, completing his task in a manner indicative of further successes over a journey. Fink Note made a gallant effort, and fought, out a sterling, fnisn to the bitter end. Pegaway caused a severe blow to investors who entrusted him with nearly twice as many tickets as was cr edited to Pink Note. He gave every promise at the straight entrance. hut failed to see out the journey. while Bright Glow also laded out at' a- critical stage. « * * * Sudden Storm was the only dclcelion from the Suburban Handicap, and Silver Paper was elected a little better than even-money favourite. His followers had little cause lor anxiety as he registered a very easy win. lie and Pin Tin Tin were the first out and led on to the course proper from Keddar and Freehold and Cimabne. Lin Tin Tin was done with at the distance and Silver Paper was left in charge. He momentarily appealed to be weakening. but when kicked up to his task he streaked away from the field and won by a length and a-half from Cimabue. who bent Lysander by a neck. Kcddar was next, and then came Freehold and Moa Bird, with Pin Tin Tin last. Silver Paper virtually made hacks of the opposition, and it was a matter of regret he was not produced in the Thompson Handicap. it * * * Arikinui. Noteworthy, and Second Thought were the most sought alter in the concluding event ot the meeting, the Belmont Handicap, and investors were sent homewards in a good mood as the trio finished in the order supported. As the field swept on to the course proper Arikinui was in charge from Chief Singer, Kahu Arikh Mari'ca, Second Thought, and Noteworthy. ft was left to the last-named to tackle the leader over the concluding stages, and although he finished on gamely under pressure lie was unable to get up, and Arikinui beat him by half a length. Second Thought was a length away, closely attended by Chief Singer, Arrow Boy, Lady Spear, Glare, and Stanchion. • * * * The two-ycar-old filly Gay Ballerina has been sold to a Sydney sportsman, Mr H. CL Kirkpatrick, for 2,(Kings, and is to be raced at Manawatu and Auckland prior to being shipped to Svdney.
