BOWLING

[By Measueee.]

Tho season nears its end. To-morrow the last of the twelve interclub games are to be played. No interest attaches as regards the result of tho shield competition—Roslyn Club is secure in its hold of that. Still, the final games will have their attraction, and with favourable weather conditions many players will have an enjoyable game tomorrow afternoon. 1 _ Tho champion of champions competition for tho Dunedin district was played last Saturday on Dunedin green under favourable conditions, fine weather prevailing and an excellent playing surface being provided. The alteration from tho two-life system to “sudden death ” worked well, and everybody appeared to bo satisfied. Champions mot champions, won or were defeated, continued in the contest or dropped out, and tho fittest survived. That seemed to be tho general opinion when C. Tyrrell, of Roslyn Club, was eventually proclaimed winner for tho second time in succession. Ho was not so hardly pushed on this occasion as last year, when he had to win with his last bowl; but he had several tight games all the same. The runner-up, J. Seddon (St. Clairl, played several fine games. Tyrrell, on the day’s play, thoroughly deserved his win. Tho annual match between Otago and Canterbury players, eight rinks a side, decided last week at Christchurch, resulted in a won for tho Otago men by 194 to 172 points. The value of these contests, in my opinion, lies in the faeff that players from different centres meet each other and form friendships which can have nothing but beneficial results. Therefore they should be encouraged; as a test of bowling skill the competitions should not be regarded too seriously. On their way homo tho Otago players met the North Otago men, but this time they went down, tho Oamaru players having a lead of 175 to 150. Last Saturday afternoon the annual match St. Andrew’s Church v. Kaitnna Bowling Club was played on Kaitnna green, four rinks taking part. The game, which was keenly contested, resulted in a win for tho Church by 12 'points, tho score being 73-61. During tho afternoon Rev. H. J. Ryburn (the new minister for St. Andrew’s Church) visited the green. The annual Loving Cup match will be held on Saturday, March 16, on both the Balmacewen and Otago greens. In tho evening the customary smoke and musical function will follow at 8 o’clock in the Otago Chib’s pavilion. The following players will represent North-east Valley in the Adess Shield competition:—Muir, Sneeston, Tonkin, Strang (s). Balmacewen will be represented by G. Adamson, T. Ferguson, J. Adamson, J Buchan (s). The rink chosen to represent St. Kilda comprises P. Edwards, D. Stark, J. Rowland, and D. M. .Stuart (s). St. Clair Club will close its green on April 2. Members generally are well satisfied with the improvement shown this season, and extra care has been taken in tho matter of providing suitable top-dressing material for use during tho coming recess, so that the green may be still better when play is again taken up. Though little appears in print of the doingp of Wednesday players, the report is that interest in their competitions has been quite keen tins season. Some of them think that even more excitement would prevail if only someone were struck with tho happy thought of providing a trophy for competition. Saturday players arc well enough provided for, but there is nothing tangible for tho Wednesday men to achieve.

Caversham’s thistle-holders (Edlin, Melville, Love, and Brown) successfully resisted a challenge from Blackwood, Tanner, Ball, and Aitchison last week, but last night lost the trophies to Anderson, Mathewson, Wilson, and Lock. The club tie winning rink is Wacher, Hodson. Wilson, and Mitchell. The Caledonian Club has again offered its green to the Ladies’ Bowling Association for the champion of champions event, which will take place next Tuesday. There are ten entries, and the test will bo on the two-lifo system. The ladies’ interdub matches concluded yesterday, with the result that Caversham, St. Kilda, Bay, and Valley have an equal number of (joints. These will play off to find the winner of the banner.

Tho Indies’ bowling tourney which concluded last week was a. well-managed affair, and the finals on the Caversham green drew large crowds of both sexes. The win of Mrs Weaver (Roxburgh) in tho singles event was a popular one, and so was that of Mesdames Higginson and Easton in tho doubles. Mrs Easton has now won the three events /rinks, doubles, and singles) in these tournaments. Mrs M'Namara (Balclnthn), who has been champion of her club for the past four years, skipped tho winning rink and was runner-up in the doubles.

Up to last night a score of names had been handed to Mr Hanning for the Otago Central tour, commencing next Thursday. I hear vthat the Ladies’ Bowling Association executive contemplate visiting Roxburgh at the same time.

Alter another pleasant holiday spent mainly at Queenstown the impression is confirmed of the value of the pretty green in the Domain there as a nursery of the bowling game. One man who was playing regularly admitted that it was seventeen years since he had sent up a bowl, and it was evident that the fever was on him again. A young man, there for his health, was induced to try his fortune, and was doing so well that he is sure to become an addict. It goes on this way all the season, and hundreds must have first taken to the game at the famous tourist resort. There are always some Dunedin players, there. Among them during my stay were Messrs J. Scott (Roslyn), H. E. Wilson (Mornington), W. Forrester (Kaituna), E. A. Rosevear (Dunedin!, D. Shirreffs (Leith), D. Stark and F. Sherwood (St. Hilda), and A. T. Campbell (West Harbour). The champion rink of Southland proved to bo composed of Torrance, Ayling, Stewart, and D. H. Thomson. The competition was played on Febru-
