ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

A FAIR APPEAL FOR AID The lady members of tho St. John Ambulance Association have organised the street collection that was made today in aid of the association’s funds. Nobody would warrantably answer this appeal churlishly nor evade it on the pica that street collections are too frequent in Dunedin, for it is five years since the last public canvas of tho sort was made, and further, the need for such a move is urgent, since two of the three ambulances that serve the public of all ranks are getting the worse for wear, and help must be forthcoming if the three district nurses are to continue their work amongst the poor. Sympathy with the association in regard to those requirements and its general activities could be indicated to-day by the moderate expenditure of a shilling in the purchase of a badge. That is all that was asked for by the collectors, though their request boro tho implication that larger sums would bo acceptable now or at any time. There were no goods to sell. It was simply stniightout giving, and alt good citizens must hope that when tho returns are made up to-night a worthy response will appear. The collectors were at their stations before 8 o’clock this morning, and were to remain on duty till 6 p.ra.. The stands were allocated thus:— Jacobs’s Corner —St. John Ambulance Ladies’ Guild (Mrs G. M. Baker). Stock Exchange—St. John Ambulance nursing divisions (Mrs Beaumont and Miss Holey). Grand Hotel—Mrs Barningham and Mrs MTntyre. Government Life Corner —Airs r osL City Hotel —Mrs G. M. Davis and Aliss E, M. Harbrow. Strand Corner —Mrs Arundel. Sprosen’s Corner —Airs J. J. Clark and Aliss Jean Burt. Frederick street—Aliss Glciulimung.
