(Received March 6, at 30.20 a.m.) Details received hy the Mamina, which has arrived from Rabaul, of the attack made a month ago upon a Government party in the Onongc distinct show that two patrol officers and a party of native police went to the village' of Goilala to attempt to arrest a native for murder. The villagers showed open hostility, and in the resulting conflict one native policeman was wounded and nine Goilala. men shot. The murderer was eventually arrested, and is now awaiting trial. INQUIRY INTO STRIKE. PERTH, March G. (Received March 6, at 11.15 a.m.) News from Rabanl states that Briga-dier-general Griffiths began an imjuiry into the origin of the natives’ demonstration on. January 2 and 3, when most of the police boys and 3,000 indentured labourers deserted Rabaul. Outside the court were thirty-one ringleaders handcuffed together. These aie now serving a sentence. Some will give evidence. Missionaries gave evidence that the natives left work because they wanted higher wages, as the white man was taking gold from their country.
