WEST HARBOUR COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING The West' Harbour Borough Council hehl its monthly meeting at Ravensbourne last evening, those present being the Mayor (Mr J. M. Fraser), Crs Smith, Downes, Harridge, Macdonald,; Venn, Asher, Young, French, Robb,and Kay. At the opening of the meeting tha Mnj'or referred to the loss Cr Macdonald had suffered by the death of his daughter, and on behalf of the council conveyed to him deepest sympathy. The members present stood m silence as a mark of respect. . CORRESPONDENCE. The Department, of Internal Affairs wrote that the West Harbour Empowering Act appeared to be on ilia point of expiring, and asked if the council concurred with it being repealed.—The repeal was concurred in.The West Harbour Ratepayers’ Association wrote asking the council to approach the Railways Department regarding the erection of a shelter at Maia station, and to delay the usual 10.17 p.m. train to 10.35 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, failing that to 11.15 every night.—lt was resolved to write to the association, that the council was not prepared to move for an alteration in the 10,17| p.m. train, but would endeavour to have the 11.15 p.m. train reinstated. With regard to the shelter, it was decided to request the Railways Department to supply one. The" Sawyers’’ Bay Progressive League wrote asking the council to supply 4.00 ft of six by one hardwood for a channel leading from the monument to Mr Bews’s corner; also if the league could get the stones lying on the side of the road at the bridge fog filling in purposes.—The requests were granted. Mr J. Coutts wrote asking for a street light near the top of Ellens street, St. Leonards ward.—Referred to the Lighting Committee.—With regard to a request for metal the council agreed to supply tins. The Minister of Public Works wrote with regard to the Duneclin-Port Chalmers road, and promised to consider; the council’s representations.—Received. The District Engineer wrote asking for information as to traffic inspectors engaged on the main highways by local authorities, wages paid, and other expenses incurred.—Received, it being mentioned that the matters did nob affect the council. The Musselburgh School Committee forwarded an invitation to attend a farewell to the head master, Mr J. B. Grant.—This had been suitably replied to by the Mayor, FINANCE COMMITTEE’S REPORTThe report of the Finance Committed stated that there was a credit of £8(15, and accounts amounting to £4OO had to bo paid.—The report was adopted,; and it was resolved that rates amounting to £3-1 be struck off. WORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. It was recommended that the concrete channelling in Athol place bo proceeded with at a cost of about £6O. —Adopted, it being further decided In complete the tarring and sanding of the main road at Ravensbourne. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector reported that on inquiring into the matter of concrete channelling he had found that it cost £8 to £lO per chain, seven chains having to be done in' Athol place. During the month one horse had been impounded. He recommended that all outstanding rates be sued tor.—■ Adopted. With regard to the duplication of the railway lines to Port Chalmers the council considered that the work was not being done as quickly as could be desired, and a resolution, moved by, Cr Robb and seconded by Cr Venn,; was passed that the attention of tha Minister of Railways (the Hon. W. 8.Taverner) he drawn to the fact that several men had been, put off the work,which would hinder the construction considerably.
