CHAMPION SWIMMER APPEARS

ST. GLAIR CLUB'S CARNIVAL KEEN IHTERCLUB COMPETITION With the added attraction of I. W. Cameron, New Zealand 100yds champion and record-holder, as a competitor, it was not ■ surprising that there were seven or eight hundred spectators at the annual carnival staged by the St. Clair Life Saying Club in the Municipal Baths last night. Cameron competed hero at the St. Clair_ Club’s carnival last season, and also in the intermediate division at the Now Zealand championships. Ho came into great prominence this season byshattering all records for 100yds, and his tour was arranged as a result. Though he was giving away big handicaps last night, he was placed in every event in which ho swam, though he took part only in finals. He was third in both 50yds and 100yds handicaps and second in the 100yds backstroke handicap. His time for the 50yds was 25 2-ssec, and for the 100yds 59sec, while in the backstroke ho registered the splendid time of Imin Ssec. Considering that the Dunedin water is on the slow side, Cameron’s performance were good, though not up to his recordbreaking efforts. Still, a swimmer cannot be expected to go on breaking records all the time, and his powerful thymic stroke was an eye-opener to most of those present. He carved his way through the water, and while ho was fading a little at the end of 100yds he swam very fast over the first two lengths. He was conceding big starts to Otago’s best swimmers, but showed that ho was a real champion by the manner in which he set out to make up the deficiency. The winner of the 100yds handicap was S. D. M'Kenzie, a promising ,St. Glair swimmer, whose time was 67 3- B. Kerr collected a double, winning the 50yds handicap off SJsec, and the 100yds backstroke off 13sec. in the latter event ho shaped most promisingly-. One, of the best races of the evening was the 100yds breaststroke handicap, which was won by the intermediate champion (G. Durand) off 2sec. his time being 88 2-ssec. From scratch the New Zealand junior boys’ champion, R. Geddes, put up a wonderful performance to finish second, his time being Sffsec, a great effort for a junior. Miss M. Mathieson swam a good race, off scratch in the 66 2-3yds ladies’ handicap, which she won in 48sec. A big feature of the evening was the splendid exhibition of diving given by Roy Caider, New Zealand men’s champion, A. M. Rix, New Zealand intermediate. boys’ champion, H. W alker, ex-New Zealand champion, and Miss 1). Foote, Otago ladies’ diving champion. They performed their usual spectacular fancy dives, and Caider and Walker in the “ Mornington surf championship ’’ brought the houssc down. Competition throughout was keen, ■ and some splendid finishes were witnessed, the programme being brought to a close with a water polo match in which St. Clair defeated the Rest, led by Bill Cameron, by 1 goals to 1, after a good game. The carnival wont off without a hitch. The judges were Messrs F. H. James, P. N- Bundle, and R. J. Priest (swimming), and Messrs J. L. MTndoe, F. G. James, and W. Jenkins (diving). Mr W r .
