Mr G. L. Johnston left by the 11..Tt train to-day for Wellington. The Rev. Father Anderson, who lias been on the staff of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, for nine years, travelled to-day to Christchurch, where ho is to remain for a few months and then start on a journey to Rome. Mr W. Hayward, a well-known business man, has _ been selected by tho Citizens’ Association to contest the Christchurch mayoralty (says a Press Association telegram). At a special meeting of the Moruington School Committee last night it was decided to accept the appointment of Mr David T. M’V'ie to the position of third assistant as recommended by the Education Board.

A very pleasant function took place in the board room of the Standard insurance Company yesterday on the occasion of the retirement on superannuation of Mr E. J. Gibb. Mr Fisher, general manager of the company, in handing Mr Gibb a gold watch (suitably inscribed), spoke in eulogistic terms of his long and faithful ;scryiee. Mr Anderson, the local manager, also spoke, and gave many interesting incidents which, had occurred in the thirty-four years during which Mr Gibb had been attached to the company. Mr Gibb, who was cordially applauded, responded. The funeral of Air Charles Walter Sell, who was drowned in tho Upper Harbour last Monday night through tho speed boat Mystery capsizing, took place yesterday afternoon. There was a largo gathering of boating men, who followed the cortege from the residence of the deceased’s father, Highgate, Maori Hill, to the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery. The commodores of all tho boating clubs in the harbour were present. There was a beautiful array of flowers, and the sympathy of the boating fraternity and friends was shown by the largo number of wreaths which covered the coffin. An impressive service was conducted at tho graveside by the Rev. Mr Foot. A Sydney cable message states that Dr H. Major, principal of Ripen Hall, Oxford, and editor of the ‘ Modern Churchman,’ has arrived at Sydney, en route to New Zealand. A London Frees Association cable states that Miss Nellie Scanlan, a Wellington journalist, won a £2OO prize offered by'the ‘ Daily Express’ for the best post-card film criticism. A Sydney Press Association cable states that the remains of the Chief Secretary (Mr A. Bruntnell) will be tendered a State funeral on Saturday. Visitors to the Grand Hotel include Dr Marie Hamilton, Judge H. Montgomerie Hamilton (Sydney), Messrs J. R. Todd and Q. A. Welch (Wellington), Mr and Mrs C. J. Broderick (Invercargill). Late arrivals at the Excelsior Hotel include Mr and Mrs L. W. G. de Gy u lay (Sydney), Mr G. L. Gun - , Mrs F. A. Orr (Auckland), Mr P. Jacobsen (Hamilton), Messrs J. A. Foster, Barrett, J. Robertson, C. Irons, and R. R. Martin (Wellington), Mr and Mrs J. Williams, Mr J. S. Innes (Timaru), Mr D. Marshall (Waianfwa).
