ROYCROFTERS EXHIBITION BOOKS, ETCHINGS, ETC.
A very interesting and profitable half-hour may be spent in viewing the work of the Roycrofters, an exhibition of which is at present in progress at 117 Princes street. The Roycroft shops were founded by Elbert Hubbard, ami are situated in East Aurora, Erie Country, New York. From this solid and picturesque pile, a replica of an English monastery, comes some of the finest printing and book binding in the world. Elbert Hubbard was, by the way, drowned when the Lusitania went down, and the business is carried on by his son Pert. Worthy of the highest praise is the display of etchings, some coloured, others drypoint. Works by John Fullwood, F.S.A., and Mabel Robinson, A.R.E., both artists of outstanding merit, reproduced with infinite care by the Roycrofs, deserve an inspection from every citizen who appreciates fine art. The works of well-known authors—amongst'which is Shakespeare himself—bound in soft lambskin and numerous other leathers of raft) beauty, are exquisitely printed in the style the monks used centuries ago. There arc also many compressed volumes—books of perhaps 2,000 pages, but printed upon India paper, that will fit in a vest pocket. Messrs James Johnston, Ltd., Princes street, invite inspection of this very interesting display.—22/12/28.
