“ Anxious.”—'Unking powder can easily be made at home. Mix together thoroughly and pass through a sieve 4os baking soda, doz tartaric acid, 4oz rice flower. Store in air-tight jiirs. “Cleanliness,”—Yon may lintl it difficult to clean the parts of the hats that arc soiled by the hair. There is a kind of soap-cake sold for removing stains of that sort, otherwise yon had better try rubbing carefully with _ a benzine-soaked white piece of material. Star some distance from the stains, otherwise you will have a circle loft round.
“Molasses.” —In answer to last week’s request for a good recipe for table vinegar, Mrs Webster kindly sends the following, for which many thanks: —Boil some water, and when cold, to every three quarts _ add one quart of bruised gooseberries in a largo tub. Let them remain sixty hours, stirring often, then strain through hair bag. To each gallon of liquid add Jib of the coarsest sugar. Put into a barrel with a piece of toast and yeast. Cover the bung hole with a bit of slate. When sufficiently sour it can bo bottled or used direct from barrel. It is ready in six months. The greater tho quantity of sugar and fruit the stronger the vinegar. “Inquirer” (Portobcllo). —As a rule, in a competition for small cakes, no cakes large enough* to be_ cut are included. Therein lies the distinction between small cakes and others. It is a pity that tho misunderstanding should have arisen, as no doubt you would again have gained tho prize. Better luck next time. “Xylonite.”—lf the yellow spots on your xylonite box arc caused by hydrogen peroxide you will probably not bo able to remove them. Otherwise you might try bleaching them by _(1) rubbing with lemon juice or a little methylated spirits, or (2) rub with finely-ground pumice stone, or (,'J) put a little diluted chloride of lime on the spots and then wash them with water. ______
