(Received December 21, at 1.50 p.m.) It is authoritatively stated that the doctors arc very much more hopeful regarding His Majesty’s ultimate recovery, but at present they cannot have complete confidence, because the King is in such a weak condition and the exhaustion is so profound that the possibility of a set-back cannot entirely be ruled out. The exhaustion, however, is much less than that experienced during the past few days, and the King is in a much safer position,; but he has not yet reached the level of complete safety.. If 'the good progress continues for several days unchecked absolute confidence will bo felt. The doctors are not yet in a position to say when the goal will be reached. In the meantime anxiety continues, but it is considerably less acute than it was. The atmosphere at the Palace is much more hopeful tonight. There wore seven doctors at the Palace to-night, including the ray specialists. It is understood that the object of the second visit was to continue the discussion on the future line of treatment. At present it is not known officially what decision was taken. It is also not known how long the ray. therapy treatment will continue. The Prince of Wales was in consultation with the doctors. ' Sir Stanley Hewett again stayed the night.—Australian Press Association.
Tho Otago Harbour Board last night carried tho following motion: —‘‘That this board expresses its sincere aiul loyal sympathy with His Majesty in his distressing illness, and fervently prays that His beloved Majesty be speedily restored to health, and that a copy of this resolution lx) forwarded to His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral.” At, tho 'meeting of tho Hospital Board last night the chairman (Mr \V. E. S. Knight) made feeling reference to tho illness of His Majesty tho King, and expressed the hope that he would soon be restored to health, his remarks being endorsed by. other members.
