MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL

A special meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council—the final for this year—was presided over bv I lie Mayor (Mr J. P. Walls). PERSONAL. The Mayor referred to the retirement of Mr J. M. Dickson and Mr T. K. Sidey from the constituencies they had represented in parliament. On his motion it was agreed to send a letter of thanks to Messrs Dickson and Sidey for the attention they had given to Mosgiel affairs. Tho council also passed a motion of congratulation to the Mayor of Dunedin (Blr W. R. Taverner) on his appointment as Minister of Railways. CORRESPONDENCE. 'The District Engineer, New Zealand Railways, Dunedin, notified the council, in answer to their application, that if 12yds of liin metal were supplied at the crossing Green street the department would have the formation made up and tho metal spread.—lt was resolved to reply that as tho place was railway property it was not the council’s work to provide tho metal. Tho Rector, Holy Cross College, wrote asking the council to instruct the sanitary contractor to level the refuse deposited at tho tip and to refrain from carting there old tanks, etc.—it was decided to have the matter attended to and to inquire if the contractor was responsible or private individuals. The contractor had not placed any refuse there for over three months, the material having been deposited in tho recreation ground area. A report was aimed for next meeting. The Taieri Pfunket Society applied for the yearly grant from the council. —Approved. Tho Taieri Horticultural Society applied for the use of the hall for a show on Biarch 2.—lt was resolved to reply that the hall was not available for that date, as arrangements had been maao for the screening of a special picture; but the Pictures Committee was empowered to arrange for another Saturday night if siidi suited tho society. REPORTS. Tho Inspector reported that Mr Tyndall, of the Highways Bodrd, had visited Mosgiel on December 15 and inspected Gordon road with a view to laying down a roadway similar to that being now made on the adjacent roads in the Taieri County. Mr Tyndall had promised to prosecute tho matter further on his return to Wellington. Tho cutting up of Gordon road by

metal carting to the public works on the Main South road was discussed, and the chairman of the Works Committee and the inspector were asked to interview the authorities on the matter. The Clerk mentioned that the Public Works ' Department was using approximately 5,000 gallons a day from the water supply, on the terms agreed upon with the chairman of works. —Noted. GENERAL. Transfer of property in King street, allotments 5 and 6, block 2, private township of Mosgiel, from a deceased state to a beneficiary was notified by Mr A. A. Finch.—Received. The clerk was instructed to alter the roll accordingly. The meeting being the last for tho year, the Mayor extended the season’s greetings. These were acknowledged by the councillors and the town clerk.
